PHOTOGRAPHERS: Best Digital SLR Camera Out There is...?
 

I'm looking for a D-SLR camera for personal use. I want it to be great overall, but not too expensive. I'm thinking Canon would be the best brand to go with, but what about specific models? I want the "feel" a picture can only get with an expensive camera... you know, that crisp, lifelike feel.

I recommend the Nikon D80.

Great photos come from great photographers, not the camera. The cam can only do so much. Plus you need to define a price, because there is a bit of a price jump as you start going up the food chain.

A Leaf Aptus will cost you $30,000.00 Is that too much?

Honestly, it's not about the camera but the photographer.
Any Canon DSLR can take pictures that will rock, from their 300D [rebel] up to the 1dsMII

You get what you pay for...I would definately go with a Canon though, they are great. Just get the most expensive that you feel "comfortable" buying! I have an 8 megapixel one and, although you can getter better, It is a fairly good price for the quality of pictures you can take with it. Good luck:)

Go for Canon 5D

canon 5d - claims to be 'full frame' but the problem is you have to get all new lenses.. old ones wont work, and the new ones are very expensive

canon 30d - the best for its price.. i just picked one up and love it! easy to navigate, much easier than nikon imo

I shoot all my work stuff with an 1dmII and my person fun stuff.. with an non-slr sd550

Yes, knowing how to take a good picture helps, but the lenses also help. a $200 camera isn't going to take the same kind of pictures as a $1000 camera. I was just looking for model suggestions.

i'd have to disagree on that... i've seen work here shot with x,xxx-xx,xxx cameras and shots with basic point and shoot cameras... you'd be surprised

i think the rebel is your best bet... it's a great camera... next one up would be the 30d, also a great camera. you can buy the greatest camera in the world, but if you can't shoot, it's useless... it's never the camera.

just cuz it's 30k, doesn't mean it's the best... those super high megapixel cameras are only good for specific print companies that actually print high res: billboards, certain magazines (very few), etc :2 cents:

I think you've got it slightly backwards - The 5D is completely full frame.
It supports EF lenses, which are Canon's standard lenses - the EF-S lenses are the 'digital' lenses that go on the Canon NON full frame cameras.

If you've purchased EF-S [the digital] lenses, then you'll have to ditch them, which won't necessarily be a bad thing, as their quality is inherently lesser than the EF range.


On another note, it really does come down to what YOU do with the camera, not the camera itself. I shot on a 300V [film equiv of the rebel] for ages, and it was perfect. When I had the urge to go digital, I 'had' to go with the 1DS, as it was the only full frame digital at the time - and seeing as I shoot a lot of wideangle, I couldn't use anything less. If it wasn't for the weather protection, I'd be on a 5D or less for sure.

If you're looknig to shoot content, perhaps the 1D M2 is better with its crazy framerate.

..or perhaps you do portrait work, which in that case, a non full frame camera is neat, because you get the 'free' focal length.

I recommendation to you is to get a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. Its a great camera for the price. If you want something a little more "pro" get the Canon 30D or Nikon 200D

As has been said its the person behind the camera much more then the camera itself.
One of the photography teachers at the local U has taken pictures with a kids toy camera that are amazing, and no one would ever guess they would taken with anything other then the best camera.

and I have seen horrible shots on a 30d

Are you experienced? Do you have lenses? Do you put your camera on auto mode when you shoot?

If you know what you are doing, the Canon 5d is an excellent choice. If you put it on auto and dont really know how to use a camera, get a Rebel XTi. Get a quality lens with either, thats a major key in quality photos. The best camera in the world will produce shitty photos with a shitty lens on it. Get quality Canon glass whatever body you buy.

catalyst is dead on. go with a rebel. I think they are around $450. I shoot with a canon 20d. it's a good camera. the new model is out, 30d. but the body is going to hit ya for $1400 and then for the higher grade lenses you're looking at another $1200 a piece. You'll be thinking dammit when you leave it on a beach in mexico =(

Where can you find one at that price? I found prices around $700

Nikon D50 or D80..biggest difference is the megapixel.. just got the D50 to learn and will progress from there.

Canon Lenses are more affordable..nikon lenses are pricey but damn good.

I paid $550 for the d50 kit w/ lens..couldnt pass up the price with a full warranty.

I like Canon DSLRs. I usually use a Canon Digital Rebel body with some Canon Ultrasonic lenses.

Olympus has a couple of great SLR kits that are sub $1000 with an lens or two. If you can find one of the discontinued E300 kits, it might even be under $500 for the body + a 14-45mm and 40-150mm lenses. An excellent value.

We just got the new canon rebel xt...even with the stock lens it takes amazing pics.

try to rent a camera in first step, or better 2, so you see witch one is better to handle for you. rent 2 cameras from same brand, with any different lenses, so you can check it on both of your cameras! i mean CALUMET stores around the world, they have fair prices and mostly good new stuff for rent!
And book a good model, use good daylight or studiolight and then, make your set!

Love my Canon 20D... I know it getting older but it still rocks!

ha ha this too funny. give a photographer a free camera and he will endorse it..
if you get a camera which is too advanced it may be to your disadvantage. it is harder to get the colors, saturation etc right with an advanced camera, but once you get it, it is right on.
If you want full frame, go canon. if not look at nikon d80 or fuji s2 / s3. possible go into a store and hold the camera, some find the controls on canon difficult to work with..
