seo question: i'm ranked #1 for a hot keyword, but..

I don't have meta data set up. Could it hurt my ranking if I were to add a meta description? I think it would get me some extra traffic if the description made more sense..

It won't harm your ranking.

setup a content expire tags and get that indexed with current info
then add your description, google by default will use meta description if its there.

exactly.

i have SO many people that do that, and any change could hurt you. It took me a while to get this one client awesome rankings for home improvent terms, then once he breaks top 3, he gets the WHOLE site redesigned.

"if it aint broke, dont fix it"

because I'd like something other than my site's navigation in the description in SERPS..

I get the feeling that you didnt even try
for this keyword due to the fact that you
already didnt have a meta description.

Maybe you did and just forgot.

I personanly wouldnt mess with it.
Im sure people are used to seeing
gibberish descriptions.

Description and Title tags are very important when it comes to SEO. If you got to #1 for that keyword, dont change a damn thing. Adding a description just might send you off into the sandbox

RRRED 01-29-2007 01:33 PM

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Just make more pages! And make sure you're promoting a program that's going to pay you well... hint hint

davethetruth 01-29-2007 01:34 PM

Don't fuck with it? Are you people serious? You don't even know what SE it's on lol.

He'll probably have the listing for a week either way, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Yup, the stupid descriptions and URL's get the most clicks -- because they stand out!

I used to use as title:
XxX -Insert Keywords- XxX

-- made me lots more clicks :)

You can steal these ideas, im officially no longer in adult :1orglaugh

:)

VIPimp 01-29-2007 01:43 PM

Only thing you should do is make sure you are promoting http://www.FreakBucks.com on that page :winkwink:

RyuLion 01-29-2007 04:54 PM

what is it? let me look at it and I'll tell you more..:upsidedow

Chio 01-29-2007 04:58 PM

if it's google don't worry about it as they don't use metadata at all.

WiredGuy 01-29-2007 05:10 PM

You have the number one spot, don't touch it. Nothing you do could possibly improve your #1 spot, so don't touch it!.

You can choose to have google always display your meta description. search for "google snippet". (I'm feeling lazy tonight)

That's good for branding or if you really spent some time making a catching description

madawgz 01-30-2007 01:17 AM

edit at your own risk ;)

chaze 01-30-2007 01:22 AM

Funny we have some top ranked competition that has no meta data, I think google likes it for some reason.
