Do Any Reputable Webmasters Use Anonymous Domain Registars?

Most of the cheaters we encounter utilize these kinds of anonymous domain registering services and we've pretty much blacklisted anyone that has their domain registered with them. Powerpipe is one of the ones that gives us the most cheaters...

Does anyone else here utilize these kinds of domain registering services, if so why?

I have for the same reason above but I do agree it makes things difficult when trying to verify identity.

SmokeyTheBear 01-28-2007 05:43 PM

i used them on some old domains because i used to get a shitload of snailmail spam , but i think it was just crappy network solution selling my addy or something as i have lots that arent protected that i never get any snailmail 2 so now i dont bother..

StarkReality 01-28-2007 05:57 PM

I'd say it this way: Domain anonymity doesn't mean a webmaster is less reputable, but not revealing identity makes it certainly harder for programs/owners/webmasters to build up reputation if they aren't around for a long time or well known anyway.

With google's new "whois patent" many will probably think twice in the future if they use anonymity services, because penalties for domains using them could be just around the corner.

Btw, this anonymity isn't 100% effective anyway...since there are things like whois history publically available.

If you're talking about whois protection, then yeah, lots of legit webmasters use that.

Why? I'd say most use it because they dont have a p.o. box and instead put their real home address, which they dont want being public information.

Fizzgig 01-28-2007 06:04 PM

There are too many fruitcakes and stalkers in the world. I believe in making them work if they're going to harass me.

Doctor Dre 01-28-2007 06:05 PM

You are talking about the feature to hide the information that every registar use nowdays ? Yes I do.

Jace 01-28-2007 06:19 PM

my home is my office, i don't want everyone and their mother knowing where I live

GTS Mark 01-28-2007 07:32 PM

Anonymous registrars? Those who offer WhoIs blockage?

If so, yes - all domains are whois protected. Reasons are simply privacy and no ulterior motive. Unless it is any valid enquiry - eg law related, - they have no problem establishing ownership.

slapass 01-28-2007 07:47 PM

Not sure if I am reputable but i use those too.

rapmaster 01-28-2007 08:21 PM

I used one because I don't really want friends or business associates seeing my name on an adult site

teg0 01-28-2007 09:14 PM

I use them and I'm not any less reputable.

Xplicit 01-28-2007 11:37 PM

Yeah I use them for my domains whois info.

If you dont, you get snail mail addressed to your porno .com's which i dont like.

warlock5 01-28-2007 11:53 PM

Absolutely, otherwise its really easy to do a reverse DNS and then someone can see all your sites if they know one.

SleazyDream 01-28-2007 11:55 PM

just cause cheaters use it doesnt mean that legit people don't as well

or maybe those saying they are legit ARE the cheaters

hummmmmmmmmmmmm

wyldworx 01-29-2007 01:08 AM

chaze 01-29-2007 01:10 AM

how do u do this?

Gambit 01-29-2007 06:20 AM

Most of the registrars offer a whois protection for free. I can't see any reason NOT to use it.

Ditto for me.

DaddyHalbucks 01-29-2007 07:13 AM

I don't bother. I do everything openly.

1. Looking to shield yourself from cybersquatting claims? Using such a privacy service (falsifying WhoIs records) may be evidence of 'bad faith' under the ACPA of 1999.

2. Looking to spam or commit fraud? Read the fine print. These services don't protect you against a subpoena.

3. Looking to block spam? You may miss important emails.

Matt-RevShare 01-29-2007 07:17 AM

I do everything above board and I really despise the anonymous registrar. I wouldn't be surprised to see these things outlawed and I think they should be.

Its against the law to give false information in your registration and this circumvents the whole purpose of having a public whois system anyway.

Well, enough of my soapbox, but I do feel strongly about this.

In my opinion, the best way to prevent your personal information from appearing in the WhoIs is to incorporate.

Or even a DBA and get a $20 a month PO box.

RyuLion 01-29-2007 04:49 PM

Chio 01-29-2007 04:50 PM
