DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) -- Chad Hurley, co-founder of YouTube, said Saturday that his wildly successful site will start sharing revenue with its millions of users.

Hurley said one of the major proposed innovations is a way to allow users to be paid for content. YouTube, which was sold to Google for $1.65 billion in November, has become an Internet phenomenon since it began to catch on in late 2005. Some 70 million videos are viewed on the site each day.

"We are getting an audience large enough where we have an opportunity to support creativity, to foster creativity through sharing revenue with our users," Hurley said. "So in the coming months we are going to be opening that up."

Hurley, who at 30 is one of the youngest Internet multimillionaires, gave no details of how much users might receive, or what mechanism would be used.

DateDoc 01-27-2007 12:15 PM

is it sort of a reimbursement for using shared bandwidth through P2P if that is the way they are going?

4Man 01-27-2007 12:16 PM

i'm sure they'll do something like pay per user submitted video i doubt they would go as far as a PPV program, cool concept though i'm sure it will draw even more people to use youtube

Ditosta 01-27-2007 12:39 PM

There is a site already paying you for uploading vids based on views

Contra 01-27-2007 02:03 PM

That's cool news. Time to start making short movies -

Konda 01-27-2007 02:27 PM

I have seen some video upload sites that share a % of the revenue that the ads around the video generate with the uploader. Probably YouTube will do something similar?

So if you upload a video, YouTube gives you a % of what the adds that are displayed generate.

SmokeyTheBear 01-27-2007 02:29 PM

i called this along time ago :) i also offered a million dollar idea that still hasn't been used

HomerSimpson 01-27-2007 03:52 PM

RawAlex 01-27-2007 04:31 PM

Umm, dumb question... but if you have a business that has effectively no revenue to speak of (and no hope of being profitable in the next 100 years) what exactly are you sharing?

Youtube is already sounding desperate, and it hasn't been that long since they were sold.

woj 01-27-2007 05:42 PM

interesting...

wyldworx 01-27-2007 05:55 PM

interesting story, my tube is better, and payment is made using the old currency of "shag"......

eyeballs = ad $

I guess we can expect adsense blocks surrounding every video and the video creator gets 5%.

This is perfect timing because I have a shitload of youtube accounts and I have just recently come into posession of some Paris Hilton videos....
mad money yo.. :thumbsup
