Ain't this about a bitch......

I've been collecting Jack Daniel's bottles for 14 years now. For the last 3 or 4 years I have been on the lookout for a specific bottle that is not available for standard U.S. purchase. The only place I have seen this bottle is in Duty Free shops in Chicago and Dallas/Ft.Worth and I was not on flights leaving the country so I couldn't buy them.

These bottles can be bought on eBay for $140 - $450 USD.

Well......I'm sitting in an airport on my way to Thailand. I glanced through the Duty Free and found what I have been searching for.

I grabbed 2 of them and headed for the register. The lady asked for my boarding pass. She looked at it and said: "You're going to Tokyo?" I told her I had a layover in Tokyo then off to Bangkok and so forth.

Lady: "You no buy."

Me: "Why not?"

Lady: "You go Customs in Tokyo then security again. Bottle more than 3 ounces. They take from you."

Me: "Fuck!"

Ain't that about a bitch? I finally find this damn bottle when I can buy it but it will be confiscated because some dumb fuckers tried to blow up planes with liquid explosives.

Terrorists are keeping me from enjoying my Jack Daniel's........Bastards. :321GFY

You should have asked for a box and stamps and mailed them back home from the airport.

Please allow me to rephrase....

I collect full and sealed Jack Daniel's bottles.

An empty bottle is of little value to a collector.

Not sure how many stamps it would take to mail from Tokyo or how many pieces the bottles would show up in.

I've yet to see a UPS Store or any other packing / shipping company who could properly protect and ship bottles from an airport terminal.

With any luck, they will have them in Tokyo or Bangkok on the way back and I can just pack them in my checked baggage from there.

No, you can't.

In the U.S when you buy Duty Free, they send the packages to your plane. You pick them up as you board which is why I would have to ship them from Tokyo.

Karupted Charles 01-27-2007 10:57 AM

Aaron hit me up when you get time I think I can get this sent to you.

Nikki_Licks 01-27-2007 10:59 AM

Sounds like you need to get in touch with someone who has a liquor license and have them order it for you, or is that possible?

Exactly.

When you run into that kind of stuff, or you do not want to deal with trinkets from trips. You just FedEx (or however) them back home. Saving yourself a lot of grief.

:2 cents:

I guess every airport is differrent but at the Honolulu airport people buy shit and it's boxed and mailed. It's the only way to get a box of pineapples out of Hawaii (asfarasiknow) so I see that at the airport all the time.

Not possible where I'm from.

Again, this bottle is not available for standard U.S. purchase.

The guy who owns the local liquor store by me is also a JD collector. That's why I was buying 2 bottles. I always pick things up for him. There are a lot of Jack bottles that you can not get here.

EXAMPLE:

There is a series called "Scenes of Lynchburg." There are 7 different bottles in this series. The U.S. has them available in 5ths but outside of the U.S., mostly Europe, they offer the same series in 1 liter sizes.

Then there is Jack Daniel's Silver Select which is a 100 proof version of Single Barrel. Silver Select was created specifically and only for Duty Free shops.

You can't even buy these bottles at the Distillery.

Shipping pineapples is a bit different than shipping liquid filled glass bottles that also have to clear customs. If I were able to buy from Duty Free and ship from the U.S....which you can't......It would be illegal since it defies the purpose of duty free.

You can also pay the duty and skip the dumb shit.
There are only restrictions for people who dont pay the duty.
This is a collectors item so he would pay the duty to get it.

Just pay the duty.
You wanted this stuff right?
You weren't just shopping for cheap prices right?

AaronM 01-27-2007 11:17 AM

The fuckers are sitting 75 feet away teasing me.

It's the bottle on the far left. The silver one next to it is Silver Select.

And when I tried that while crossing customs last time, the duty was over $100.00 per bottle.

Stuart D was there....Ask him about it.

interracialtoons 01-27-2007 11:18 AM

Well, at least your weren't drinking the stuff when this happened.
I was comming from Canada and eating some beef jerky and US customs took it from me along with two slim jims....fucking nazis. :1orglaugh

Try to comprehend this then get the fuck out of my thread....

When you buy something at a Duty Free store, you are required by law to leave the country with the item you have purchased.

If I leave here with it they will take it from me in Tokyo.

Thank you for playing.

Yeah, good point.

I don't recall that you can buy any at the distillery as it is in a dry county (at least when I visited it 20 years ago).

OH JOY!!!!

I get to show baddog where is is actually wrong for once. :)

Yes, Lynchburg is a dry county and no, you may not purchase alcohol there for consumption. However.......

They are legally able to sell certain bottles as collectibles. I mentioned the Scenes of Lynchburg series above.....The U.S. version of the first bottle in that series is only available for purchase at the distillery gift store in Lynchburg. I bought 2 of them there.

Whichever is easier and will insure the prompt delivery of said JD.

If going with the private jet, can we stop by and pick up the twins on the way out?

He has tons of bottles and stuff at his house. (rugs/bottles/dart boards/ jackets.. everything) .. if he has it he'll give it to me no problem. That's a shame. Use it as an excuse to go to Tijuana when you get home.

Brown-Forman is the parent company that owns Jack Daniel's. Is that where he works? Every drop of JD is produced in TN.

It sounds more like your buddy works for a distributor rather than JD or Brown-Forman directly. An East Coast distributor would not have access to items like these under normal circumstances. But stranger things have happened. It wouldn't hurt to look into that option.

Thanks. :pimp

I would have just bought one bottle and hoped that I could charm the folks in Tokyo into letting me keep it. I as a black man have learned many techniques of using charm..If I didn't have it, my life would be much harder.

Priorities are a bitch...but like I always say "you can't rush a good thing", so take your time on the throne and get your ass back on Baddog's flight schedule.

AaronM 01-27-2007 12:24 PM

It just occurred to me that baddog does not have a passport yet....Even though I've encourage him to get one on many different occasions. :(
