Plesk or Cpanel?

Following on from my pennywise or strongbox thread, which server admin software would you recommend? Plesk 8.1 or CPanel?

Which of the two is easier to use?

Do they both come with full server stats? I see Cpanel have webalizer built in.
Are it easy to add new domains/email to the server through their gui?

Pricing is quite apart though CPanel $48 a month, Plesk $399 one off payment for 100 domains.(which is preferable!)

What are your thoughts?

Lycanthrope 01-27-2007 08:11 AM

Direct Admin

darksoul 01-27-2007 08:14 AM

I would recommend none. (just get a managed server)
But if you really have to, go with Plesk or Direct Admin
Cpanel is too bloated.

loco12 01-27-2007 08:18 AM

Think I have ruled CPanel out due to the cost of monthly fees. Will check out Direct Admin right now. Thanks

Pedronas 01-27-2007 08:29 AM

Plesk very comfortable

loco12 01-27-2007 08:35 AM

CPanel is ruled out as too expensive.

Direct Admin does't seem to have a decent server stats package.

What are server stats like on Plesk?

DrunkEric 01-27-2007 09:44 AM

plesk has webalizer and awstats

PHP-CODER-FOR-HIRE 01-27-2007 03:23 PM

Klen 01-27-2007 03:46 PM

Cpanel is a resource hog. :2 cents:

dready 01-27-2007 04:58 PM

cPanel will kill your server.

Something along the lines of awstats. I see cPanel has Webalizer built in, but Plesk or Direct Admin don't.

I need to be able to add domains to my server, as I buy a dozen or so a week and its a pain calling up tech support to make folders on the server etc. Also add email accounts to the new domains.

I need full stats for the server to monitor traffic in detail.

So what is the best bet?

Cash 01-28-2007 11:39 AM

cpanel ...

Sorry, but you are incorrect.

DA has webalizer built in, and you have the ability to add your own domains to whatever IP is on your server/account. Creating emails is a breeze as well.

To quote the welcome email I send to all new accounts at GotWebHost: To learn more about using the Direct Admin panel, I suggest reading http://reseller.site-helper.com and www.site-helper.com

Plesk and it's derivitives are crap.

beta-tester 01-28-2007 02:13 PM

I honestly like both...However cPanel/WHM is better organized IMO, and I'd go with it....

Big_D 01-28-2007 02:15 PM

I've only used Cpanel and its been great and easy to work with for me.

nosey 01-28-2007 02:16 PM

Cpanel :)

I use cpanel and I like it just fine. I have the choice of using analog, webalizer, or awstats and if you turn off some of the logging then cpanel isn't near at bloated.

loco12 01-28-2007 04:55 PM

Thanks for the advice, especially bad-dog for pointing me to those pages.

Fizzgig 01-28-2007 06:27 PM

I was going to say I find CPanel easier to use, but it looks like you have your answer.

raymor 01-31-2007 02:04 AM

From a technical perspective DirectAdmin is "best" in HOW it does things.
It's much more gracefully integrated into the server whereas the other panels
tend to be clunky hacks. I also like it as a user and the couple of people hosted
on my server seem to like it. It and Webmin are the only two I'd ever use on
my servers. Without DirectAdmin or Webmin I'd rather do everything manually
rather than use Plesk or cPanel, but I'm a geek.

Between cPanel and Plesk, I'd go with cPanel. Plesk is too clunky and intrusive.

Webmin doesn't have as smooth of a user interface as the others, but is great
for geeks with dedicated servers. It's free, extremely flexible with many free add-on
modules for different purposes, and is open source so you can add to it or change it.
There were some things I didn't like so I changed them and sent my changes back
to the maintainer to be included in future versions. If you're not very geeky you'll
want to do everything through the "Virtualmin" module, which gives a more cPanel
like interface than the other Webmin modules.

madawgz 01-31-2007 02:19 AM

i personally like Plesk...but cPanel is also really easy to use....

madawgz 01-31-2007 02:20 AM

if you want to go for security, dont install any control pannel...:thumbsup

loco12 01-31-2007 03:01 AM

Wel basically I am fucked anyway and can't use any of them. The server is brand new but already the hard drives are setup and its up and running with hundreds of gigs of content on it. To install Direct Admin they want to install it on a new server BEFORE its in use, so the horse has already bolted.

HomerSimpson 01-31-2007 03:18 AM

cPanel RULEZ!!!

if you don't have much cash or you don't need nothing fancy DirecAdmin is nice and cheap solution...

Vitasoy 01-31-2007 03:44 AM

Got CPanel on my server.

just a punk 01-31-2007 05:53 AM

My vote goes to PLESK.

UKJack 01-31-2007 05:54 AM

Cpanel It may cost more but its worth it

Himuro 01-31-2007 06:20 AM

Plesk is fucking slick, but cPanel is a bit better

directfiesta 01-31-2007 08:09 AM

if you want a free one:

http://vhcs.net/new/modules/wfchannel/

It can be installed AFTER the OS .

Otherwise, I prefer Cpanel... but again this is a question of personnal choice vs personnal needs.

MattMN 01-31-2007 08:49 AM

Pretty much the same IMO.

Plesk is more slick and easy to use but tends to have less addons included with it. Cpanel is a bit clunky and annoying but has usually has more addons and scripts - especially if you have fantastico with it.

One thing to note, in my experience you can't point domians to the same shared hosting account in plesk - whereas you can in Cpanel if you want to.

molly_ca 01-31-2007 09:50 AM

I'll dare to say Plesk .

tombarr 01-31-2007 09:53 AM

We operate both on our various servers... my preference is cpanel.
Seems better organized and logical

u-Bob 01-31-2007 10:07 AM

cpal will take down your server and plesk sucks big time (it's a kindergarten control panel).

check out webmin.

XSV 01-31-2007 10:12 AM

We prefer DirectAdmin all the way... and include it on all standard hosting plans. cPanel has expensive monthly fees and don't be fooled by that Plesk one time fee of $399 for 100 domains... they will get you with annual fees if you want to keep the license current and ever want to upgrade to the latest version.

Also, as previously mentioned, DA has Webalizer built in AND there is a free module to add AWStats if you prefer that.
