What do you do when you lose your focus?

I've completely lost it, hit a wall - I haven't done a fucking thing productive in 3 days. I just can't force my mind to focus on work.

What do you do to get back on track?

This is serious - I'm thinking about getting a job for a change of pace, and that's a horrid thought!!!!

gangbangjoe 01-26-2007 08:10 AM

best solution: go on vacation

your body shows you that he needs some rest.

after a few weeks off you will sure be back a 100%

L-Pink 01-26-2007 08:10 AM

I find that a two day drunk in a cheap motel room with a young skank always clears my mind.

whatever floats your boat

teg0 01-26-2007 08:15 AM

Go for a long walk or bike ride. But, I see you're in Milwaukee. Being from Iowa I know that you really can't go for long walks or bike ride this time of year. Just take a break from technology. No computer, no tv, try to not even use the cell phone. Just un-plug yourself for a day or two. That always works wonders for me.

Agent 488 01-26-2007 08:16 AM

get drunk.

Brad Gosse 01-26-2007 08:24 AM

I agree with gangbangjoe

vacation is what you need. Pack up and go somewhere nice to get perspective.

Wolfy 01-26-2007 08:29 AM

I'm heading to Vegas in a couple weeks, I don't want to take off now... I'll feel guilty the whole time I'm in Vegas. I need a quick fix, a patch, to get me through until my vacation.

The walk/exercise suggestion is good, it usually works... but it's just not right now. I went out yesterday and busted my ass snowboarding for 4 hours, as intensely as I could. I came home, planning on whittling down the ever-growing to-do list, and I got the same thing... a fucking blank stare at the dual monitors.

Wolfy 01-26-2007 09:16 AM

fuck it, I'm going to go blow $100 on lunch. Somebody meet me at Asiana at noon, I'll buy you a drink :D

robfantasy 01-26-2007 09:20 AM

go to the gym

Pimpin_J 01-26-2007 09:26 AM

Sports sounds like an option..

kowalsky 01-26-2007 09:31 AM

When I can´t focus, I use that time to do all those things that I never do because I am a fucking computer addicted.

4Man 01-26-2007 09:57 AM

Take some vocation...

Wolfy 01-26-2007 05:10 PM

eh, I went tanning, got my haircut, blew some money on Sushi... I'm better now :)

I shouldn't say "blew", because good sushi is never a waste of money. God I love that shit!

GhazAllOva 01-26-2007 05:44 PM

Detach yourself from whatever you're doing and do something you don't normally do. Fatigue could be another reason. Make sure you're eating properly, drinking fluids, resting, and exercising.

Hopefully the sushi did it for you.

Take a vacation, a real vacation. Leave the laptop at home. Go to spain. Or China. Or rent a sailboat and go find tom neales island. But get away.

A new work environment might give you a boost in productivity.. try moving things around in your office, switching corners or something.

sweetcuties 01-26-2007 06:32 PM

DateDoc 01-26-2007 07:49 PM

find a way to break the monotony of your work. change things up do something different.

wyldworx 01-26-2007 07:50 PM

Buy a bmw, and be done with it!

RawAlex 01-26-2007 07:53 PM

Okay, my trick is this: When you lose your focus, it is often because you have either hit a goal or set a goal that is too far away to accomplish. Basically, you can't get a grip in the next step.

Take a day off and go do something relaxing that doesn't involve anything to do with work. Go boarding or take a long drive or anything that completely takes your mind away from work. Don't think about it in the slightest.

The next day, sit down first thing and revise your goals. Reset yourself, setting the first step in the chain as something that can easily be achieved.

Enjoy.

So what happened?

Nicolette 01-28-2007 06:41 PM

either a long hard run, preferrably outdoors with a fantastic view

or vacation, which should include nothing more than sitting your buns on the beach or by the pool and not moving for at least 4 days

pick the option that best suits your level of need to get away

I suggest you take some time off. Your mind and body need to REST.
