what pisses you off about freehosts?
 

Hey guys/gals what pisses you off about freehosts? I'm building one and trying to figure out what people want and what they hate about others.. I will be offering PHP/perl/shtml and MySQL.. yes i know i'm a brave man but someones gotta do it and make the edge. Let me know your thoughts.

you must have an aweful lot of time on your hands to want to go this route, you're gonna need it because for every kiddy porn site that you delete off your server--10 more will take its place.

You could make a script which would take care of many kiddy porn sites by looking at words in the site filenames etc.

I get pissed of if they don't send their japanese traffic to our program to make more than they are making on that traffic now

I get pissed off of people always complaining about free hosts. Pay some money for better hosting if you don't like it.

Can't hate em and can't love em.

Why? Because I already know what to expect from them. I just use them for some galleries. All the freehosts have diffrerent terms. You'll eventually brake em because they change them all the time.

If you do decide to use em. Be sure to check the terms. Some of them make you use a select few of sponsors. Be careful what words they blacklist, etc.

The point is your better off using a payhost with a cheap bandwitdh bill. You'll make surfers and tgp owners more happy.

I get pissed because free hosts exist.

I would love to see a freehost with support for PHP/perl/shtml, if you keep your servers fast and your ads clean, you will will be extremely popular I imagine.

But there are shmucks out there who will use perl to make infinite loops and shit, so if you can find a workaround, go for it. I'd be quick to sign up with ya.

Those freakin banners on the top and bottom, & the traffic redirection stop calling it free if it isn't! I'm still waiting for a true free host :winkwink:

checking loads and such is not a hard task, I already have scripts that check and kill runaway processes and pretty much make sure loads don't go to crazy. if you know anything about prohosters you should know we are on top of everyloaded server within minutes. :winkwink:

Cheaters who use them!

Well you sound like you know what you're doing, please let us know when you guys start accepting signups. Relatively unknown freehosts are the best in my opinion, cause the TGPs ain't banned em yet, and the servers are usually quite fast cause there are few people.

Some free hosts are fine for years (but to find them is like finding the "needle in a hay stack").

What really pisses me off: when they start to re-direct traffic, even if it's "only" foreign language traffic... That's the quickest way to get blacklisted with lots of people!

Personally I accept the top- and buttom banners as long as they're clean and small(-ish).
I think it was Pimpserver who had a top banner some two years back which implied child abuse (something like "Daddy's little darling") - that got them onto my blacklist the first time I noticed it.

And no console hell from your 404-pages (or even worse: forced 404s by deleting selected files or suddenly lowering the file size limit) - please!
That's cheating your webmasters and the surfers :(

I guess there can be money in free hosting if you keep it clean and build yourself a reliable reputation.

A word of caution: since too many free hosts cheated with "bannerless" hosting most TGPs blacklist them now automatically...

prohosters are good people, i got few weeks ago a v.account with them and their support is ultra fast.

as far the freehosts,i can say the game is near over there. Only very few hosts left accepted fom tgps and the webmasters that want mysql etc except the newbies who can't afford mcdonald meals use paid hosting.


the most annoying is the country redirection.

Multiple servers that are out of sync by over 20 mins.
What's with that? RAID SAN and NFS are so easily done.

Other than that, mouse over ads... Take the top and
bottom, it's your server, but if I'm doing the submitting

Those 2 alone forced me to paid hosting.

What pisses me off about free host? Free host piss me off..

Mmm i plan on buying a snap server we already have two F5 Big-IP load balancers to use if things start going big.. I don't see any problems if things start taking off. But how many people have accesse to those types of devices? i do :)

:uhoh Not load balancing... drive syncs! God I hated
uploading a site/page and then running off to submit
only to find out that it worked from say 2 of 3 load
balanced servers because the drive syncs hadn't run
yet. Get your users asses banned for that lame ass
scripting. None of the top TGPs or Link sites like a 404
and the freehost user pulls his hair out cause he can
see the site.

You wanna run a "real" freehost, learn to setup a
server farm first. Then you can play with the morality
of ads and (shudder) redirects.

Like I said, I don't care if I lost 60% of my click throughs.
I can live with that for the free bandwidth, but for
F's sake, run the server as if it was any commercial
server! I won't use freehosts anymore because 90%
of the people that run them can't even configure
a server at a junior admin level.

Um.. i'm in charge of prohosters clustered solution. thats 10 servers in a farm + 2 cgi only servers, behing a bigIP load balancer and 400gb scsi NFS server we host over 30k domain names on this cluster with out a problem.

Wanna give it a go, I'll take a another stab, but
promise in writing you'll keep it up for 6 months to
not piss off the big lists. I can't say you won't do it
right, I can only say that I've had bad experiances
from a technical level, before I even got "fucked".

Sure, if you're sitting on bandwidth without a good idea...
you've only got so many choices. A freehost will get you
the most SE traffic in the quickest time. Hey maybe, just
maybe you can revive the freehost concept, give it
shot!

Nobody mentioned the warez issue yet. Just wait for it. As soon as you open the freehost, you wont get any sleep :)
(Unless you find a way to automate that process)

oh don't worrie i've already taken that into consideration :thumbsup

Actually a lot of companies have these or similar devices and they dont make any of them special.

Also have fun with the warez.
