Shark bites head of diver and he pokes it in the eye!

An abalone diver has survived having his head bitten by a white pointer shark that attacked him off the NSW south coast today by poking it in the eyes.

Eric Nerhus, 41, was diving with his 25-year-old son and a group of other divers at Cape Howe, near Eden, when he was attacked by the 3m white pointer about 10.30am (AEDT).

The shark grabbed Mr Nerhus by the head, crushing his face mask inwards and breaking his nose, said friend and fellow diver Dennis Luobikis.

"He was actually bitten by the head down, the shark swallowed his head," Mr Luobikis said.

The shark then took a second bite, clamping its jaws around Mr Nerhus's torso and tearing deep cuts in each side of his body.

Mr Nerhus, a well-known local diver with more than five years' experience, struggled free from the shark's jaws and was pulled back aboard the boat by his son.

Two other divers in a nearby boat gave him first aid and one radioed his father, who was flying overhead in a spotter plane, to call for help.

The Snowy Hydro Rescue Helicopter arrived shortly after 11.10am and took Mr Nerhus, who was suffering from shock and blood loss, to Wollongong Hospital.

He is in a serious but stable condition.

Mr Nerhus told his rescuers he poked the shark in the eye to fight his way free, a Snowy Hydro Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman said.

"Eric is a tough boy, he's super fit," he said. "But I would say that would test anyone's resolve, being a fish lunch." "

According to the news report, he was swimming through reeds and the shark was concealed by them and he swam straight into it's open jaws!

Juicy George 01-23-2007 09:58 PM

From what i saw on the TV news yesterday he was actually sitting up comfortably talking to his doctors in hospital the afternoon of the attack! He really is a tough bastard!

From the footage they had (pictures of his torn wetsuit) it bit him across the back just below the shoulder blades, and i'm guessing the front in the same sort of area. So it's incredible he was able to poke it like he did!

I am watching an update on the news atm and they say he may be released from hospital today. :thumbsup

They also said the lead weight vest he was wearing helped and the Great White may have initially mistaken him for a seal and then spat him out because he tasted funny! :helpme

Also just found out he holds a black belt in Karate! I wouldn't wanna mess with him! :thumbsup

calibra 01-24-2007 12:45 AM

This is pretty scary: a stupid big hungry fish which is going to have you for dinner!

DWB 01-24-2007 01:07 AM

Jesus Christ that is horrible.

I dive from time to time and a shark attack is something that is always in the back of my mind.

MakingCoin_Aris 01-24-2007 02:49 AM

he's a brave man indeed, wish i had the guts to struggle with a shark downunder, good job!

Marie 01-24-2007 03:04 AM

Damn... I hope he gets back to almost normal with no serious brain damage etc...

Firehorse 01-24-2007 05:34 AM

I just saw an interview he did from the hospital and he said: "I went straight into it's mouth front onwards and my head, chest and arm went right into it's mouth."

He could feel the shark's teeth dragging all over his body.... it knocked the breathing regulator out of his mouth and after 2 minutes he could not breathe ........ and then started shaking his body preparing to eat him.

The shark crushed his goggles as it kept biting and this broke his nose... he also suffered bite marks to his chest, arm, and torso

With his right, head and chest completely in the shark he felt around for the shark's eye with his left hand and poked it in the eye. This is what caused the shark to let go .... despite the lead diving vest he still has bite wounds, and some shark experts are describing this as a miracle.

He was talking very well and has sold his story for a considerable sum..... personifying the true Aussie spirit he still has his sense of humour and all his body parts! :thumbsup
