Mountain Meadows Massacre - Mormans Kill 100+
The other night a commercial was on TV for an upcoming movie titled "September Dawn", starring Jon Voight and Lolita Davidovich. It is a movie set against the backdrop of the Mountain Meadows massacre in Utah, which was led against a group of settlers by Mormans and some Paiute indians.
The numbers are disputed, but most accounts indicate that upwards of 100 men, women and children were systematically and brutally killed. The cover-up in the aftermath was equally heinous. My wife had never heard of this event and was shocked. I told her it was true, and that it was one of the more shocking events in U.S. history, although it was mostly brushed under the carpet, like many similar stories regarding the violent history of this country, which was why she had probably never heard about it. I was more surprised that someone decided to make a movie addressing this event, since it has been largely overlooked in public school history text books. It will be interesting to see the reaction that this controversial movie brings... ADG Webmaster |

True, history often is written by the victors. Fortunately, there are other sources as well from which we might learn. If your "peoples history" reference is to "The Twentieth Century: A People's History", written by Howard Zinn, I haven't read it yet. Nonetheless, I have much respect for many of his other writings which I have read. My point in starting this post was not to blast the Mormon church, but rather to start a dialogue about the potential impact this movie might have. Personally, I consider the Mormon Church to be a rather bizarre cult when I look at it's origins and history. However, I also recognize that Mormons have been unjustly persecuted in many instances as well (there are historical accounts of Mormons being murdered simply because they were Mormon - and the founder of the Latter Day Saints, Joseph Smith, was murdered by a lynch mob while he was in jail). Please clarify your comment if you wish to. ADG Webmaster |

it wont make much of an impact because i am betting the movie will place much of the blame for the attacks on the ruthless, violent native americans

There has already been at least one movie made about this subject and at least one documentary. I have seen both.
