'Dead' duck survives two days in fridge

A duck has been found alive in a fridge two days after being shot.

The duck was discovered alive after the hunter's wife opened the door and the duck lifted his head.at their home in Talahassee, Florida.

Local vet Laina Whipple said: "The man's wife was going to check on the refrigerator because it hadn't been working right and when she opened the door, it looked up at her.

"She freaked out and told the daughter to take it to the hospital right then and there."

The duck was transferred to Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, where it was been treated for wounds to its wing and leg.

Sanctuary veterinarian David Hale said it will probably never be released back into the wild, reports the BBC.

He said the duck, which has a low metabolism, could have survived in a big enough refrigerator, especially if the door was opened and closed several times.

amazing! talk about the will to live, huh?

At least the wife seems to be interested in saving a life, rather than taking it. Bet she was happy to have a "dead" duck in the fridge, feathers and all!

Hey, Bush is going to survive 2 more years as President. Same trick, really.

omg. i would have flipped out. then again, i don't think i'd be too keen on my husband shooting a duck and just putting it in the fridge like that. :)

i hope the duck is okay!

I seen that on the news.. thats sad about the duck but at least it lived... I think it suffered a broken neck and was shot in the wing and leg or something like that... pooor thing..:(

I heard about this on the radio. My first thought (after wondering how in the time between the shooting and arriving home the guy never noticed it wasn't dead, even unconcious it has to breathe) was how gross that he'd throw a bloody unwashed whole "dead" animal in a fridge and leave it for days. Hopefully this was a 2nd fridge dedicated to the purpose and not their primary home fridge.:upsidedow

dynastoned 01-23-2007 08:29 AM

don't people clean the animals before they store them for a couple days? jeez

Vick! 01-23-2007 11:17 AM

lolz .. poor duck.

BVF 01-23-2007 11:32 AM

At first I thought to myself that I would just kill it and cook it up...But if a duck could survive being shot and put in a fridge for two days, I'd probably save it just because he deserved to live.

wdsguy 01-23-2007 11:32 AM

ducks taste great.

4Man 01-23-2007 11:58 AM

I like ducks ! ! !QUA QUA

jacked 01-23-2007 12:02 PM

thats pretty dam crazy who woulda thunk... lol

i would have atleast made sure that the duck was dead before taking it home and putting it in the fridge.

smoke 01-23-2007 12:13 PM

The hunter should have broken the neck of the bird when he shot it at least thats how I was taught.

Verity 01-23-2007 02:21 PM

omg poor bird! I think I would've passed out had I opened the fridge and had a duck look up at me. But then again, my meat comes in manageable, unrecognisable plastic packs lol

micker 01-23-2007 02:23 PM

they should take his hunting license away, permanently. Thats just wrong. that bird should have been dead before he put it into his bag, let alone got it home.
