Icy roads and extreme driving in Portland [vid]

http://www.break.com/index/icy_roads_in_portland.html

Is this really true? I mean snow is a regular thing in northern Europe and Canada, I swear to god that we don't have roads that are THAT icy :1orglaugh

How is this possible?

eZe 01-17-2007 10:39 AM

LOL yeah it is true. I am in Seattle and drivers here do NOT know how to drive in the snow. 1 inch of snow will shut down the city.

two other factors.
1) Seattle has 3, yes thats right 3, snow plows for the whole city
2) we have alot of hills. it is not unlike San Fran.

Wow...i know people have to get around to work and make money, but it seems to dangerous to drive with conditions like this:2 cents:

bumper cars rock

borked 01-17-2007 10:56 AM

That's nuts - I thought the first car shown was doing it on purpose!!!

Haven't you guys got snow chains???

cardinalvices 01-17-2007 11:16 AM

It seems that the first guy was so frustrated that he kept pushing it.. I bet it wasn't a guy even :)

First guy wanted to make sure his deductable was met and/or exceeded.

Snow chains and pumping your brakes would both be useless. That was a hill with sheer ice under that thin layer of snow. Once you start going down it you are a hockey puck at the mercy of gravity. It's a rare occurance to see that shit. The ground temp has to be below freezing while the air temp is above freezing. Thus the precip falls as rain and freezes once it hits the concrete. :Oh crap

crazy stuff, glad i dont have to drive on that.

I live here and it's been a wild couple of days. Yesterday I saw a guy go around a corner to fast, start spinning, do a 180 and smash into a car that was parked on the street. He really was an idiot because he tried to go around the corner at a 4 way intersection at about 25 miles an hour on a road that was a solid sheet of ice. He never had a chance. Once he started sliding it was over.

Nah, surely chains would generate enough friction at that speed, no? Studs would do the job, surely, but I woulda thought you had a far better chance with chains than without.

Sure looks rare and fun though!
