Sarah_Jayne 01-16-2007 06:56 AM

Stallone was down at a football match here the other day trying to relive that and promote the new Rocky movie at the same time.

scottybuzz 01-16-2007 07:00 AM

Shaolin Soccer was allright

Alain DeLarge 01-16-2007 07:14 AM

It's tough to make a good movie about any sport period.

I kinda liked "He Got Game", but it had less to do with playing basketball and more to do with the story of an up and coming player.

As for football/soccer taking over the States, HA! They are WAAAAY to set in their ways. I'm pretty sure ice hockey isn't a big deal down there. They got teams, and some are diehard fans, but it's at least the fourth sport, if not lower.

Canada has a better chance of adopting it with our larger proportion of immigrants. It's actually exciting that the U-20 World Cup is happening here this year.

Lee 01-16-2007 07:49 AM

That was a good film though.

But if theres one thing that you americans LOVE (and i mean LOVE) its a star. A real gay primadonna that walks around with makeup and painted fingernails.

And here comes beckham.

Not saying its going to take over, i just think it will get a ridiciulous boost in popularity simply because of miss beckham and maybe his hot wife.

In america, golf sucked untill tiger woods. Hockey sucked untill gretzky. Basketball sucked untill magic johnson (and later jordan boosted even more). Baseball sucked untill the babe.

Yes, i know its not a 100% direct business model, but its weirdly "accurate". Im not saying theres anything wrong with it, im just saying that you americans really love your stars and here comes one of the currently biggest of the most popular sport in the world that was never really adopted by the americans (maybe cause of them EVIL METRICS!), by all accounts soccer should get an incredible popularity boost over there in the following time.

1) I ain't american.
2) A star will boost the popularity of a game ANYWHERE in the world. I'm sure Maradona's run in Napoli multiplied the popularity of the game in the town many times over. Imagine not being a remarkable team for most of the century, and finally winning the Italian championship.

themachinelavene 01-16-2007 09:28 AM

soccer is the 2nd most popular sport in montreal behind hockey & I like it that way....even tho the beck's addition will add to the fan base it will never take off in the states....football & basketball are just too popular and established

I haven't seen Victory, but is it like all the other Stallone movies? Because basically, ALL his movies are the same. Driven is the Rocky of car racing. Rambo is the Vietnam veteran's Rocky. Staying Alive (which he wrote and directed and has NOTHING to do with Saturday Night Fever) is the Broadway dancer's version of Rocky. That's about all the guy has to offer.

Soccer Mummy is by far the best for me...
