Why Martin Luther King?
so it was decided that an African American deserved a national holiday. which is fine. but why Martin Luther King before others? why no Scatman Crothers Day? no Darryl Strawberry Day? i'm aware of Dr. King's civil rights work, just saying there are others who should have been considered.

probably because he is a good influence and role model for African Americans

martin Luther king affected a nation by providing awareness to all men being equal no matter what color or race they are - sorry, but sports and singers do not generate that kind of response.
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/spee...haveadream.htm your comments would then make Mother Theresa about as effective on the human condition as the Spice Girls. click the link - listen and read what he has to say - and ask yourself - is civil rights and liberty worthy of remembering / honoring a man vs. a really good score in a game? If you can't see that, then the Consitution is no more than words on a page and is no better or important to us than this weeks TV guide. |

MLK was a great man - who stood up for all people's rights, not just african americans..

The question would be, 'Why not?'

I nominate Louis Farrakhan.

I admire him because instead of telling suffering people to pick up a gun and fight to overturn immoral laws, he told them that they can change the law by appealing to their oppressors' inner morality and love. Same with Ghandi.
MLK may have his blemishes and faults, but one thing is clear--he chose the path less traveled by effecting change through peaceful means instead of violence. It's easy to use anger and hate to create change. Unfortunately, this plants even more seeds of hate and destruction. It takes a real hero to appeal to the humanity in all people to make the right changes. R.I.P. MLK, you remain an inspiration to people around the world. |
