How does medicare work in the states? (im a canadian in vegas)

Ive developed some sort of nail infection..
I really want to go see a doctor before this gets out of hand

Anyone know how much I would be expected to pay here in the states? Do you pay by cash to the doctor himself or is there a lot of paperwork involved?

Juicy D. Links 01-14-2007 06:01 AM

Medicare is for the Elderly bro.

If its bad go see a doc , post a pic of the infection

What does free healthcare have to do with a visitor needing treatment?

I wouldn't go to Canada and expect free Healthcare.

In the uk no one pays for healthcare unless you want to use private facilities. Including visitors to the country

ztik 01-14-2007 08:50 PM

prly cost you like $100

and you won't have to wait for an hour in line either

What's stopping poor people from other countries flocking to the UK for free medical treatment?

We have many not-so-prosperous neighbors to our South.

EBORG9 01-14-2007 09:53 PM

If you are broke you can get Medic-aid, but you have to be Black or Mexican, Canadians don't count....Just kidding.

If you go to University Med Center (emergency), they will treat you and attempt to bill you later.

It's on Charleston just west of the 215, or you can try a UMC quick care.

Don't be bringin' those Cannuck infections to the U.S., isn't that how shit got started back in the 80's?

tony286 01-14-2007 10:11 PM

it will time to pay

OzMan 01-14-2007 10:20 PM

Hit me on icq if you need a good local Doc although not sure if he is open tomorrow because of holiday...otherwise try a Quick (and nasty) care. Not sure whether they will want cash up front or bill you..shouldn't be much anyhow unless you need some super antibiotic or something

fallenmuffin 01-14-2007 10:22 PM

just go to the doc probably cost between 100-190

In the UK we have lots of people flocking from places such as east europe and asian countries and we still give them free health care....If your in the UK you get it free ..its that simple..

We also have programs such as a free new car if your disabled etc.

This is not a USA bashing reply as I like the USA ,but you are very very far behind in many welfare/social/healthcare issues compared to other countries....yes I know this will be a shock to you and many other americans..but the rest of the world is a little more advanced than some of you think!

getting to england is a lot harder than jumping a border, the flight there is probably too expensive.

We are also very far behind in the tax rates too. Calling the UK (or Canadian) medical care "free" is pure bullshit unless you are indigent because otherwise you are paying out the ass in taxes for your "free" medical care.

The "safety net" in the U.S. is that if you go to a hospital emergency room they have to take you whether you can pay or not.

This is true. But the level of care you get is vastly different if you dont have insurance. I was in the emergency room one time, arrived by ambulance from a motorcycle accident, didnt have my insurance card with me. The way they treated me then was very different from the nice, professional care I got an hour later when my wife showed up with my insurance card.

directfiesta 01-14-2007 11:50 PM

You go to the USA, you take insurrance, either by paying your airfaire with a premium gold card ( check what they offer as insurrance ) or thru a special insurrance firm ( 30.00 or so for 3 weeks ... ).

:2 cents:

A heart attack, a car accident can cost 100K and more .... If you have assets, then you are fucked!

Didn't say it was a good safety net. lol. The hospitals for one hate it. But it is really the only true safety net that applies to all states, otherwise a lot of it is handled differently state to state.

TORTOISE 01-14-2007 11:59 PM

sarettah relax.......Of course nothing is free.....

we have to pay for it via many different ways,we are not that stupid !!!!! smokers pay more than you in tax etc..but the bottom line is everyone gets free health care and social benefits ..I didnt say I agree or disagree with the issue I was just stating the fact that everyone even with 0 income was well looked after health wise and social wise compared to the usa .:pimp

I am not excited, lol. I just don't like hearing "free" thrown out there. Folks do it here too, all the time. A couple of years ago, the city of Kansas City decided to quit delivering our "free" trash bags, ignoring completely the fact that we had approved a 1% sales tax increase to upgrade the trash collection and the way they sold the increase to the voters was that they would provide the trash bags as part of the deal.

Like Heinlein would say TANSTAAFL (there aint no such thing as a free lunch) :thumbsup

I agree sarettah the word free is used to often..when in fact nothing is free in any country you live in :thumbsup

I'd go check Alberta's health care website and see if there's a form you can fill out. As far as I know the Alberta government is bound to pay for ANY procedure you receive abroad that is covered in Alberta. I'm sure you will even be able to find a list of all the procedures which are included. The only sticky part is even though the CHA plainly states that your provincial government has to pay you'll probably need a lawyer to get them to pony up - or a good journalist.

In summary: (1) you're gonna have to pay even though the Alberta government is to be billed directly. (2) The Alberta government will tell you to fuck off when you ask for a refund unless you lawyer up first.

:Oh crap

No, it isn't a shock at all. I'm well aware of the many other socialized countries. "Free sub-par healthcare" versus lower taxes, I'll take lower taxes.

DAVD 01-15-2007 12:22 PM

I guess your Canadian insurance will pay for costs incurred abroad.

dude, wait until you get home if you can, paying money to see a doctor is so ghetto.

here i can stay in a hospital for 3 months and not pay a penny.

good luck to ya tho

Phone home. I'm pretty sure if you bring your medical bill back to Canada you can get partial reimbursement for the cost; I think that's what B.C. Medical told my wife a few years back (best to phone and make sure, though).

eZe 01-15-2007 12:27 PM

go to the doctor. pay cash. ask for a cash discount. The un-insured in the US pay full rate. Insurance companies squeeze the doctors down on rates so they maybe pay only 70%.

In the future some type of accident or catostrophic insurance is a good idea in the US.

Any one in the US who needs help with insurance, we are trying to put together a group rate for independant WebMasters here is a link to our thread:
