250 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL


MADRID (Reuters) - Former England captain David Beckham will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and sign a five-year deal with MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy, he told Reuters on Thursday.

"This week Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract for a further two seasons," Beckham told Reuters

"After discussing several options with my family and my advisors to either stay here in Madrid or join other major British and European teams I have decided to join LA Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year.

The 31-year-old, who joined Real from Manchester United in June 2003, is the most famous player to sign up for Major League Soccer since it began in 1996.

The deal is reported to be one of the biggest in global sport with Beckham set to earn more than $250 million over the duration of his contract.

The news ends months of speculation about the future of the midfielder whose contract with Real expires at the end of the season.

Having been first choice in the Real Madrid starting lineup since he moved to Spain, Beckham lost his place following the arrival of Italian coach Fabio Capello.

He has only started five of Real's 16 league games this season and was known to be frustrated with his lack of opportunities in the first team.

I think he's sold out. He doesn't need the money but he's doing this for his wife... She's desperate to crack America and be the big thing out there coz she's a washed up popstar and he's still a money machine. He had his choice of clubs all around Europe. No disrespect to US Soccer but LA GAlaxy aint got shit on the clubs who wanted to sign him.

I guess he'll be happy over there, his wife will stop bitching at him and he'll probably become the next big thing in the US.

I said this in the other thread - why shouldn't a man consider his wife's happiness when taking a job? It isn't like she doesn't also work and I bet a lot of what she does takes her to LA. I can't stand her as a 'personality' but why is his multi-million dollar job more important than her multi-million dollar job?

You are way out to lunch with that opinion I'm afraid, as are many other world football fans out there who don't seem to want to take this guy seriously. Beckham is one talented fucker who plain and simply makes things happen on the football field. He creates opportunities, and anyone who puts the right team around him will see success because of him.

Is he worth every penny of 250 million? I suppose we'll see, but I get a laugh out of some of the soccer fans on this board, many of whom wouldn't even include Beckham in their all-star "dream-team" roster, a huge mistake in my opinion.

I have no doubt he'll spark some interest in US soccer. I bet a lot more young women attend their games at least. :D

Hopefully, he'll have the same impact on MLS as Gretzky had on the NHL. I'm a soccer fan and it would be nice to see more people get turned on to the MLS.

Firstly, let me say that she annoys the crap out of me. However, she is the face of a number of world wide brands, works in fashion, does media work and her books (though she doesn't read them or write them). In addition to which she still makes a ton of money from the Spice Girls. Thankfully, she isn't sining these days. I was just showing that it isn't exactly the case of her sucking off of his money without bringing in any of her own. I hated the Spice Girls but they had a brutal schedule for about five years and as far as pop tarts goes she earned her money and it wasn't too long ago that she was worth much more money than he was...that was certainly the case for the first few years of their marriage. Plus, she has to be mainly responsible for helping to brand David..that - as annoying as it is - doesn't happen without work.
