i did.

i can remember mailing checks to fools and waiting to be notified that i was approved for an account. most were free at the time because no one knew how to make money, but the good ones started charging as soon as they figured out some minor commerce things.

I lived in Costa Rica at the time and there was one hosted by a major newspaper which I used to get porn mostly.

I remember BBS .. when your time was actually limited. If you wanted more than 2 hours a day on line, you paid a fee.

And then there was MIRC

Ran one for a very long time and is what lead me to adult.
Had free lines, paid lines. Extra buy time credits, extra buy download credits.
Long long story. Was very profitable and very sad the day I turned off the centrex system with the phone company.

Annex BBS in Los Angeles. I even hosted trivia shows there. Did that before going on to grad school in 95.

I was also SysOp of a few WWIV boards. Just needed an excuse to load TRADEWARS (grimace)

I used to play Scrabble via an Excalibur BBS and after it went down, I never did find an online version of the game which was as good :)

I ran The Corner Store BBS (San Diego, 1990 - 1992) on Mustang's Wildcat software, but before that I ran several on Telegard and Remote Access :)

Anyone know Marc Teitler from The General BBS? Had like 64 lines and he had local talent he called "The Giffy Girls" or something similar. Eventually sold DVDs of the content but mostly made $$$ from having them on the BBS. He took online porn to new levels back in the day. I always wonder if he stayed in Adult when the interwebs showed up...

Sure enough. I remember dialing up every list I could find hope to see some porn pics. Times sure have changed.

I used to run a BBS on an Amiga with Atreides bbs software. I actually still have the Amiga, too.

I was a member of a few BBS's that specialized in "interesting" text files, and I can find some of the TXTs that I wrote online right now, even though they were written as far back as 1989.

I had a c64 but before that even used a TI99/4a, did pics only basically, took ages to get a pic dl.

The TI modem wasnt even auto pickup it was half acoustic, drove some ppl at my house pretty nuts

I was a co-sysop on a couple of Amiga BBS's back in 1989-1990. 2400bps modem..good times.. I was a member of the Amiga crack group 'Oracle' - we had a few releases, but we were no BS1/Quartex. My thing was trading 'warez' and phreaking. This was before caller ID was around, so the phone company had no idea who was dialing from where. I stopped all the illegal stuff when I turned 18. I was into it for the fame and notoriety. Had I know that I could have made money with porn back then, I would have made a killing.

I was on many local ones in high school. I actually really miss that feel of an underground society when most people around us had never even heard of a modem. We had people getting beaten up in hallways over Trade Wars clashes.
