iPhone - How much did Apple pay Cisco for the name?
 

Since 1996 Cisco has owned the name "iPhone" and yet Apple has just launched their product with the same name which begs the question, how much did Apple pay for it.

Anyone know?

I'm guessing it was close to 8 figures...

Yeah I was thinking this, I was under the impression that the product was gonna be named something else, then after seeing it all over the news sites yesterday I was a bit confused as I knew Linksys had just brought out their product called "iPhone".

Like lets say hustler started a service called PLAYBOY that lets you view live sex on the internet ( something slighlt different than what playboy offers )

I guess from Apple's point of view it's a win/win. They've had the impact in the press they wanted for the launch, and even if they get pressured into changing the name, it can only be good publicity.

Personally I couldn't care less what it's called, I STILL WANT ONE!

It's all hype. This was a calculated move by apple - They fully intended to get sued.

That is going to be chump change relative to the amount that they are going to generate off of their new telecommunications endeavor. If they could get 1-2% of that market..... Holy fucking shit. Apple stock will be insane.

I'm sure Cisco is even more pissed since they didn't get included in the latest Apple/Google/Yahoo/Cingular/Intel happy family somehow

That's what I was thinking. Even if they have to pay out a couple of million in compensation it'll just be a drop in the ocean of what they'll make if they capture a decent percentage of the mobile/cell phone market with all the publicity they've generated from the lawsuit.

Whatever they end up calling it, people will always refer to it as the iPhone from now on anyway.

why anyone except Apple would want to call a product iAnything is beyond me. First it's a stupid name, and second using the "i" only makes ppl think of Apple. Let''s go ppl, you are getting paid lots of money to market products and the best thing you can come up with is iWhatever. If i was your boss and you came to me with a new product and you told me the name of it was going to be iAmDumb or whatever I would respond with "you''re fired" and don''t expect a good reference you retard. Are people this lazy that they can't think of a good original name for a product. Or is it just that everyone wants to ride on the coat tails of the iPod? Everyone is just stealing ideas these days. I thought cookie cutter houses were enough to make me want to kill myself, and now this crap. Give me a break...
