Blackberry vs. Treo -- which is better?

I'm shopping for a new phone which is ideal for text messaging. Do you prefer using a Blackberry or a Treo? Any particular reason why you like one or the other? Thanks :)

Young 01-05-2007 10:18 PM

If you don't need push e-mail then you don't need a Blackberry.

If you don't know what push e-mail is then you don't need a Blackberry.

The Treo accomplishes everything better then the Blackberry besides e-mail.

With that being said...I have a Blackberry.

ungratefulninja 01-05-2007 10:45 PM

I have a Treo 650 and a Blackberry 8700.

My Blackberry is collecting dust in a drawer somewhere.

I get better battery life out of the Treo. I dig the camera and video-playback of the Treo. I use the mp3 player occasionally.

Really, for me, it also depends on how much e-mail you plan on doing. Just like Young said..

There are alternatives. I'm not a fan of Windows-based devices, but you might like one of them. The Blackjack isn't half bad. Or the new Blackberry Pearl combines some of the goodies you'd get on the Treo but with the Blackberry OS. I just can't get over the trackball and the keypad.

tical 01-05-2007 10:47 PM

i have a slightly used (less than 2 days in my pocket) treo 700w for verizon i'll sell

turns out i dont need a smartphone, i keep grabbing the razr instead of the treo :)

Lance69 01-05-2007 10:55 PM

I love my Blackberry. But like everyone said it all depends on what you want. I like being able to send and receive from any address, my MSN, Gmail, Work email, webmaster email, etc, all from my BB.

i used to havea blackberry 7250 and loved it. i switched to a treo because i thought it has more features and would be better.

it does have more features, but most of them are useless bells and whistles, and the phone itself has beena nightmare. i get way worse service with it that my bb. the hot sync doesn't work anymore for no particular reason. the phone drops calls like a disease. it freezes/locks up on me constantly. most of the programs do not close when you exit, and you have to go into your memory settings and end task on everything or else it makes the phone run slow. it is also generally laggy.

i highly advise the blackberry. i will be getting a new bb in a couple months when my contract is up for renewal and i can get a better deal.

Redmanthatcould 01-05-2007 11:46 PM

Motorola Q FTW

i hated me treo(S) fyi and even went to a window's based OS after them; and when i say "them" i mean 3 if them, maybe the winbiozeOS version is easier...mine just kept crashing. :2 cents:

everyone i know has had endless problems with every palm device. windows or other.

mine is the 700w so it's got windows mobile 5.0 on it. my uncle has a 700p with the palm os and has expierienced alot of problems similar to mine.

i guess it is just their over all design.

rezdesign 01-05-2007 11:58 PM

you could consider a htc tytn (or cingular 8525)...

http://www.phonemag.com/images/uploa...gular_8525.jpg

i have the samsung ip-830w - its not bad, i like the one handed typing compared to the larger keyboard on the tytn.

candyflip 01-05-2007 11:59 PM

I have both and prefer the Palm with the PalmOS. I have the 700p. I've also got a Blackberry which I got used to, but was a bit limited compared to the Treo. I like having the semi-broadband wireless and being able to tether to my laptop when I'm not at home or the shop. We've also got a PPC6700 with the WindowsMobile and I can't stand it. I avoid it at all costs, and would recommend doing so to anyone else.

Vegas Ken 01-06-2007 12:01 AM

I have the Motorola Q and love it.

Young 01-06-2007 12:22 AM

I can connect to the web and browse at close to broadband speeds with my Blackberry Pearl and Macbook Pro.

I don't even have to take the Pearl out of my pocket.

Snake Doctor 01-06-2007 12:29 AM

I have a Treo 700p, before that I tested out three different blackberries.

The blackberry from T-mobile was the best one out of all of them. The blackberry has much better battery life, is much easier to operate because of the wheel on the side, and is much better for email.

Unfortunately I couldn't get any of the blackberries to work as a modem for my laptop, which is important when travelling.
So I had to go with the Treo because of that one feature. It's clunky and slow and if you use it at all during the day the battery will run out before the sun goes down, so you'll definitely need to bring the charger with you.
The only upside to the Treo for me is that the web browser is much better than the blackberry browser, I can surf sites like GFY and they display properly on the Treo, it was all jacked up on the blackberry.

I also really liked the motorola Q.....very small and light, with the wheel on the side like a blackberry and a very nice display. However you can't use it as a modem either :(

eZe 01-06-2007 01:27 AM

had a razr for 3 years. couldn't find a smaller better phone. For me having a phone that is small is a big deal, just can't hang with those clunky PDA phones.

I just got the BB pearl (8100). I love it. It is as small as the razr, just as good battery life, tons of bells and whistles, does email and with Opera mini surfs anything.

from what i understand the new blackberry 8700 series has changed that and now made it very easy for you to be able to use it as a modem.

I recommend the Nokia e61. Very happy with mine. Being a Nokia its bulletproof.

ezrydn 01-06-2007 08:32 AM

A friend showed me her Blackberry and it had no backlight. Personally, I am on my 2nd Treo 650 (lost the first one) and the HotSync brought back all that I had onboard #1. There's just so much more you can do with the Treo. If you go Treo, check out the "after-marketers" on applications (Handango and Handmark). They have some great ones, a lot which are free. Phone, Internet, Email, SMS, you name it. The Treo has it all, plus Bluetooth. Be sure to get on that's unlocked. Since I travel internationally, I carry several SIM chips so I can use the Treo wherever I am. LOL Get a good case. Not a belt clip but a belt LOOP! LOL

VicD 01-06-2007 09:08 AM

I got the Treo and this thread reminds me of configuring push-email on it

SinisterStudios 01-06-2007 09:15 AM

I love my Mototrola Q

The Dawg 01-06-2007 09:16 AM

BB Pearl has a weak antenna, and the backlight is a problem. I returned mine. (Good thing Tmobile has the 14 day thingee.)

Trax 01-06-2007 09:34 AM

I just wanted to step in Amelia and ask why the hell you guys have a support form online at spookycash when nobody answers... i have been sending numerous emails in the past... I normally don't bitch like that but your support is not existent... maybe there is a problem on your end that you might want to investigate.

Everybody has a "14 day thingee", it is soon to be a 30 day thingy.

How can the king of corporate e-mail not have a back light?

There is a back light...some of them lack an auto back light.

She must have had a 75XX or something similar. The auto back light feature is considered a battery killer therefore it's not included in most of those models. It has to be manually triggered. There are 3rd party solutions that work great and are easily integrated/installed and run quietly in the background.

The Blackberry is about efficiency and execution, that's why it lacks most of the multimedia features. It is not because they are inept, lack the technology or don't get it...in fact they do get it.

My Blackberry Pearl has auto back light.

Yes it's SUPPOSED to work as a modem, which is why I tested it out.
However after several hours on the phone with tech support from all 3 major wireless carriers we were unable to get it to work and the tech support people told me to return the phone to the store and get something else.

So I had to go with the Treo, but I wish I could have had the blackberry or the Q.

WWC-Moe B. 01-06-2007 11:56 AM

I had both Trio and Blackberry and still was not happy...

I got the new Samsung Blackjack and it ROCKS....

I totally love my Tero 700w from VerizonWireless. It is the best PDA I have ever had, and is a good phone too!

starpimps 01-06-2007 12:10 PM

blackberry hands down
if you like lag and bad reception go with the treo

PAR 01-06-2007 12:16 PM

I like the treo better... I find it easier to use and setup.. also like the Palm software better.. but both are great phones

yeah, i finally bitched out cingular long enough (3 hours on the phone) to get a replacement phone that was different, now i have the PPC 8125 with the pull out keyboard. i love it as a computer, as a phone it's a little less user-friendly. also if you are a mac user and you want to sync it to your desktop you have to get some 3rd party software like MissingSync.

C H R I S 01-06-2007 01:31 PM

I tried the Cingular 8525 and it was good for awhile but honestly its to big and there are some issues with it. The touch screen went dead after a month so I exchanged for the BB Pearl - which I am now regretting a bit. Without the full keyboard its hard to text. Another thing thats annoying is thatyou have a seperate icon for each of your e-mails - but all the text messages get mixed in with you main message folder.Im told that the treo and blackjack dont have this problem.

Wish I had started this thread before I purchased. I am wishing I went for the Treo or the BB with the full keyboard.

Good luck with your decision :-)

That's odd, but thanks for the heads up. We'll look into it. I don't see any emails from you. My ICQ is 222354224 if you are still having any difficulty getting an email or support request through.

love my blackberry...

DirtyDanza 01-06-2007 03:42 PM

I just went from the samsung 730 to the treo 700w... so far so good.. but been a few days... it is the windows one.. I like the hacks I have done for it I have full FTP access on here. and lots of other wistles.. I got the code to unlock and use the bluetooth as modem for my lappie so beats having an aircard... all and all the treo is good to me... I had 7 black berrys and they are worthless... like someone said unless your addicted to having your sales e-mail alert you every 2 min then stay with a windows based phone... and protect it... buy a 200 dollar case it will save you in the long run

BoNgHiTtA 01-06-2007 03:51 PM

I got the pearl after not having anything but the first Treo ever as far as phones go. I tried the new Treo, had so many problems with the old one, that I decided to give the pearl a try. Let me say this thing is freakin awesome. I can even get IM's on it, email of course, and the opera browser goes where ever I want to go. Fuck what else could I need except maybe a video phone, but ill use that maybe once a year, so who cares.

EDepth 01-06-2007 04:01 PM

I got a treo700p and freaking love the thing, but i will admit it is buggy. I do a hard reset (clear all data and restore to base software) once a month, then recopy over my base settings w/ a sync so i get my phonebook and everything else back. Takes a few minutes to do, but overall the phone is worth it.

Big_Red 01-06-2007 04:06 PM

gonna have to go with BB on this one. :2 cents:

Jenny S. 01-06-2007 05:31 PM

I like Treo, you don't need an seperate treo plan, and with t-mobile internet you can get your laptop online via bluetooth ($ 19.99/month unimited).

TzarJorge 01-06-2007 05:53 PM

ive got this one and i am happy about it.

Have you gone online with it yet?

I can get online at 200k down (not bad at all) without even pulling the Pearl out of my pocket via Bluetooth on my Macbook Pro and it takes just about 10 seconds to connect.

King Adam 01-06-2007 06:07 PM

Treo 700w.

Only thing I don't like is that after you run a bunch of programs on it, it starts running slow. A simple reset fixes that problem. The fact that I can use it to FTP to my sites, edit html, handle email, use as a modem and talk to people makes it the choice for me.

I took this advice 6 months or so ago and it was a good decision. I have a Treo 700p and I love it. I can check email, surf the internet, instant message, text message, play games, everything. I'd recommend the Treo to anyone. :thumbsup

Pinacolada 01-06-2007 06:58 PM

Blackberry is good

Andre 01-06-2007 07:41 PM

Treo = threaded SMS. Blackberry = no theaded SMS. Your questions was about text messaging, right?

I am waiting for the Fleshlight Treo. :thumbsup
