How about a basic dishonesty tied to a desire to violate others' privacy and a cowardly desire to fuck with people without being detected and/or identified?

That's scriptkiddies and crackers. Real hackers are just very good programmers, and if they would find holes in your server's security, they'd most likely just tell you and even let you know how to fix it.

Mostly because they dont have $1.99 to join.

Hackers hack for a variety of reasons.
There are two types of hackers (that i am familiar with)

1.) White Hat Hackers --- This type of hacker is very informative They do not cause damage to any data that they may come accross. Infact they will get in contact with you and tell you they got in your system and are willing to show you how for a fee . They keep themselves out of the spot light!

2.) Black Hat Hackers----This type are the destructive ones. They will corrupt any data they come accross and throw it in your face that they broke in! Kind of like when a group takes credit for thier crimes...they get off on it....Always wanting to be in the spot light


I have come accross both types and let me tell you that its stressfull when you are hacked wether a good thing comes out of it or not.

I have a buddy thats a white hat hacker and has gotten into some crazy systems and didnt do a dam thing with the data he came accross...

The above is right, the hackers most think of are AOL kids and idiots, real hackers are Allies, not threats.

What I want to know is why so many Koreans hack. 90% of the time if one of my sites is hacked it always leads back to a bbs in Korea.

China is becoming a problem as well. I dread the day when everyone has a computer at home there...We were relentlessy hammered by the operator of www.nudelamb.net for a while.
This guy was operating a stolen pass BBS to get traffic to upsell to his counterfeit VCD operation

You can set a trap for them if they are still accessing your network.....there are ways to get a hacker to go where you want them to. hit me up on ICQ #138643194 and Ill lead in a good direction on how to get some info

When corporations have complex online security systems that get hacked, they always want to find out who did it -- not because they want to have him arrested, but to hire him as the head of online security :)

i think they do it for revenge... they can hack because probably they got fired

I suspect three main motivations for the black hat hackers:

1. Greed.

Obvioius.

2. Power.

They got picked on in high school and they want to excersize some sort of power over someone else.

3. Noteriety.

They were ignored in high school and now they want poeple to notice them (and how powerful they are).

I led the development of an invoicing system for a company with $2 billion per year in sales.

As i was developing the system, I really worried about the professional computer thief who is not greedy, never tells any one what they can do or have done, lives a modest lifestyle, and steals a half a million dollars without anyone noticing.

Large companies almost never publicize when they are defrauded, even inside the company. It happens surprisingly frequently. (Luckily, never on a system I've directly worked on.)
