Death Penalty...

What are your views on the death penalty? Do you think it should be illegal or not?? Also do you think Saddam should be hanged or not?

BoyAlley 01-02-2007 09:40 AM

I'm against the death penalty.

Lazonby 01-02-2007 09:46 AM

Well, the pros of the death penalty are of course that it saves a hell of alot of money and it *may* be a deterent.

The cons are that you can execute the wrong person (although there are ways round this) and that it could potentially spare serious criminals alot of pain, and is fairly useless against terrorists unless you 'torture' them first.

pornguy 01-02-2007 09:48 AM

Depends on the situation.

Florida spends millions extra per year on death penalty
Florida would save $51 million each year by punishing all first-degree murderers with life in prison without parole, according to estimates by the Palm Beach Post. Based on the 44 executions Florida has carried out since 1976, that amounts to an approximate cost of $24 million for each execution. This finding takes into account the relatively few inmates who are actually executed, as well as the time and effort expended on capital defendants who are tried but convicted of a lesser murder charge, and those whose deathe sentences are overturned on appeal. (Palm Beach Post, January 4, 2000)

My personal view is that death penalty is wrong. For a lot of reasons. One being that I don't believe that it works as a detterent. Another being that mistakes happen and innocent people could be at risk.
A third being that capital punishment is just too easy a way out for some of these criminals. If someone rapes, tortures and kills a child, then that person should not be executed in some humane way. That person should be put in a very nasty prison and then the other inmates should be told what he has done.
Then there is the family of the criminal to consider. They shouldn't have to be punished because the criminal did something wrong, and executing someone is really punishing the family more than the criminal himself.

Thats because our government has got into it with a way to make more money, they get loads of money from the government everytime they just move a criminal via bus to take them to court, it's all over priced. And I say fuck the family of the convicted, what about the victims? Give me a .22 pistol, line them up, say 20 at a time, I'll pop them in the head and we'll bury them with a bulldozer in the back.

It's been proven, if you want to lower crime, arm the citizens, if criminals think they'll have to pay for their crimes, crime rate will go down!

Tom_PM 01-02-2007 10:24 AM

I think the death penalty is the easy way out for those who are deserving of "the ultimate punishment". In those cases IMHO, "the ultimate punishment" is living a long life with no hope of every enjoying freedom until they die.

Killing them is putting an end to suffering. Isn't that what we say when a loved one dies after a long painful illness? "At least he's no longer suffering."?

Sorry to break it to you like this but he has already been hung

Jensen 01-02-2007 10:31 AM

The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. It violates the right to life. It is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the innocent. It has never been shown to deter crime more effectively than other punishments.

In 2005, 94 per cent of all known executions took place in China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the USA.

Since 1973, 123 prisoners have been released in the USA after evidence emerged of their innocence of the crimes for which they were sentenced to death. There were six such cases in 2004, two in 2005 and one so far in 2006.

SexySisters 01-02-2007 10:33 AM

Death penalty is perfect! Save money and save us, too!! Get out of the word fucking killers !!!

Scottish Guy 01-02-2007 10:33 AM

I am against the death penalty because people can be found not guilty years later and it would be a terrible thing to put someone to death and then find out they were innocent all along. This is a caveman law that needs to be abolished

needlive 01-02-2007 10:48 AM

Hard to decide...against it because of innocent people, agree with it because some people would deserve a shot

There's a fine part of Gandalf in Lord Of The Rings 1, can't remember it exactly, something like "You can't judge if someone deserves death or not...Many died who should live and many live who should have died"

I missed it I think can't remember sorry

scottybuzz 01-02-2007 10:53 AM

Nope,

noone, no group or no court should be able to choose wether another human lives or dies.

Webby 01-02-2007 11:09 AM

Any nation who uses the death penalty is unfit to belong to the international community.

Most countries already apply a non-cooperation arrangement with death penalty regimes and refuse to hand over individuals who may be subject to the death penalty in subsequent trials.

The level of legal incompetence in certain death penalty regimes and the lack of judicial process in others is sufficient reason to stop death sentences. The US is a prime example of the former and China demonstrates the latter.

There is a bad track record of almost every aspect of death sentencing - ranging from considerable numbers of convicted persons being released to mismanaged executions with the condemed catching fire to the latest case (Florida) of lethal injection which lasted over half hour before death was pronounced.

Asking the public if they prefer death sentences is pointless - it would be a totally unqualified response - they are clueless, and often very dumb.

Lazonby 01-02-2007 11:15 AM

Well, spastics, it's always possible to change the system.

For example, to avoid executing the wrong dude, you only execute people when there is ZERO doubt, for example if they are seen by 100 people killing someone with a gun then stand there waiting to be arrested then say "I'm glad I killed the bastard." You get the idea.

As for the cost, it doesn't have to cost $24 million per execution. It costs that much because of the shitty system they have for doing it.

Like someone above said, if you give criminals the idea that they will be worse off for commiting a crime, then crime will fall. So whether you acheive that by execution or harsher punishments (I've always been keen on the idea of having terrorists tortured mercilessly, and no it doesn't make us as bad as them) doesn't matter, as long as you fuck the criminals.

Lazonby - you are an idiot - your posts make that very clear and I've employed and sacked more idiots like you in the UK than you have ever had breakfasts. Fuck off little boy and find a real job instead of claiming to be a webmaster.

here's an odd fact- i'm from Canada, where we used to have capital punishment unitl about the 1960's, when it was abolished. however, since then, our homocide rates (which i THINK was the only thing you could get hung for) has gone DOWN.

That's the same elsewhere Anita - there appears to be very little relationship with capital punishment and actual murders.

Who knows, but prob most people involved in homicides don't plot and plan them and consider 'Hey.. if I kill this person I can get the death penalty". A lot of homicides are on the spur of the moment.

Reasons seem to be very varied and with an even wider background. Can think of two kids (unrelated) who killed their parents decades ago. Think they were about 11 and 13 at the time. They were eventually executed when they reached "legal age" (that sounds sick as hell). There was a lot more to both these cases - both of them were severely abused by their parents and lashed out - they were just badly damaged children. A friend knew both of them and visited them regularly and became friends till the day they were executed - even attended the executions - that was the only friend they had. There are also other sides to every story :)

So, is the death penalty the only thing which has changed in Canada in the last 40 years, apart of course from the murder rate?

Preferably, there would be no need for a death penalty, as long as the punishment was harsh and cheap.

I am OK with Death Peanalty, but only for brutal crimes.

DateDoc 01-02-2007 07:06 PM

Whether you are for the death penalty or against it you should read John Grisham's The Innocent Man. Great book and gives an eye opening look into the death penalty.

It should be given to those people who has really sinned, but after all, it depends upon the situation..

Spunky 01-02-2007 07:26 PM

I'm for it..save the tax payers money and fry the cock suckers

mattz 01-02-2007 07:27 PM

It shouldn't exsist. People would suffer more from sitting in prison their whole lives, why give them the easy way out which would be death?

nba4life2k 01-02-2007 07:41 PM

If I murdered someone, I would want life in prison vs the death penalty. I dont wana die and the death penalty is the ultimate punishment. If your in jail, then you can escape or possibly get out and atleast you get to live.

Jail is ALOT better than death. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.
