I have Joan Jett lesbian lust, so that helps keep her in the forefront of my mind. ;)

I like lots of your suggestions, especially Manfred Mann.

I didn't know Madonna had done a verison of American Pie. Bitchslapping would be a light punishment for such a felony, and I like Madonna okay. But that song is sacrosanct. (<----is in to the wine, and probably misspelled that)

Jace 01-01-2007 11:57 PM

I agree on Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah...AMAZING

Johnny Cash - hurt - AMAZING

The Circle Jerks - A Little Love In Your Heart - awesome

joan jett is mos def jetblack chick-cool im gonna have to dig up her version. of course i heard her version first. but the original is so damn good im 99% sure ill still prefer it.

be thankful you havent heard madonnas hokey shitball version of american pie. it is a fucking sacriledge. otherwise and until that point i respected her. she has the right to butcher it, but i have the right to call her a KUNT for doing it.

interesting about covers and don mclean = the fugees wanted to change the words to killing me softly, but were told no by the writers. some hippie chick wrote the poem that became the song, while watching don mclean play live.

anyone who doesnt have grace by jeff buckley in their collection, i recommend it bigtime. unless you are a die hard hee haw or hip hop only fan. the more you listen, the more amazing that cd is.

most of you have probably heard 'hallelujah' at the end of shrek, some cover version of jeff buckleys arrangement. but his guitar and vocals on his arrangement ... holy fucking shitballs it is absolutely ethereal.

first time I heard it and it stuck out was on the season finale of season 2 (maybe 3) of west wing...two cathedrals was the name of the eipsode....wowzer...some deep shit for sure

I then got Grace, and he wowed me some more

RIP Jeff Buckley

Jace 01-02-2007 07:33 AM

interesting - "In the 1990s, The Foo Fighters recorded a hard rock cover of "Baker Street"."

foo fighters did an AWESOME version of CCR born on a bayou WOW MOMMA ill have to check all of these out.

just popping into my brain ... iron maiden does some very cool covers of sabbath bloody sabbath and cross eyed mary. not really what i mean as far as new arrangements (such as hallelujah and blinded by the light) but no less cool.

ive never watched any of those shows - jeff buckleys version was used? i wonder why they covered his arrangement for shrek ...

some chick turned me on to grace, 8 years ago maybe ... i was hanging out with her - with this music in the background and my attention slowly left her and went to the music and i had to interrupt and say "hey what are we listening to?" then i laid on the floor next to the boom box, completely ignoring her trying to absorb it all, dooming my chances to ever doink her. and i wanted to badly haha. fuck it. as the great al swearengen says "the world abounds in kunt of all kinds"

Turf 01-02-2007 07:49 AM

within temptation -> crusified (origanlly by tori amos.) kicks ass imo

heh-heh... I am a collector of all sorts of weird and wonderful cover songs...

Do ya think I'm Sexy (The Revolting Cocks, originally Rod Stewart) is a total classic. The very slight changes in lyrics and whatnot is really quite good.

Faith (Limp Bizkit originally George Michaels) is another ripping good cover tune. Not just a cover, but a nice "update".

Bring Da Noise (Anthrax and Public Enemy, originally Public Enemy) - a meeting of the hardest rap and the heaviest of metal for one of the original rap-rock melds that defined a whole gendre.

etc.

bellskids 01-02-2007 09:12 AM

WASP - Paint it black (better than the stones imo)
Radiohead - Redemption Song (very good bob would be proud u can get an mp3 from a live performance of this on limewire etc)
Radiohead - Nobody does it better(cool version of the sexiest song ever written lol)
Sinead O Connor - Nothing compares to you (Prince did the original)

bellskids 01-02-2007 09:13 AM

i guess could include the Run DMC version of Walk this way too. much better than the original

zandre 01-02-2007 09:35 AM

best ... Slayer - Born To be Wild (Steppenwolf)

worst... me with couple of friends playing White Rabbit from Jefferson Airplane long time ago , back when i was 17 or somethin - its a shame i dont have a recording of it :( , we played on a small show , our first live experience ever and we were all drunk like fuckin idiots , it just sucked :) , makes me smile each time i recall my memories :))))

zandre 01-02-2007 09:39 AM

oh , and another great one......

Death - Painkiller (judas priest original)
Altar - Fast as a shark (accept cover)

Sarah_Jayne 01-02-2007 09:55 AM

two days ago I went into a shop and their store radio was playing a cover of Eddie Murphy's 80's song 'My Girl Wants To Party All The Time'. Was there really a demand for a cover version of that?

jacked 01-02-2007 10:00 AM

any of the me first and the gimmie gimmies covers they fuckin rock :thumbsup

mikesouth 01-02-2007 10:26 AM

BEST:
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Joe Cocker - You can leave your hat on, with a little help from my friends
The Who - Summer Time Blues

Worst:
Dolly Parton - Stairway To Heaven
Lenny Kravitz - American Woman (He had no clue what the song was even about)

Profits of Doom 01-02-2007 10:36 AM

There is an acoustic version of Tiny Dancer that Dave Grohl performed on some late night show a while back (maybe Jimmy Kimmel or Conan O'Brien) that I picked up off Limewire. I'm not particularly a fan of Elton John or Dave Grohl post-Nirvana but for some odd reason this song just works for me.

BitAudioVideo 01-02-2007 10:44 AM

not the best... but also not yet mentioned ones i like..
hey joe - jimi hendrix
backdoor man - doors
cat scratch fever - pantera
while my guitar gently weeps - jeff healey

WORST EVER - lucy in the sky with diamonds - william shatner!

SexySisters 01-02-2007 10:51 AM

Robbie WIlliams - Queen: "we will rock you"

jgabra62 01-02-2007 10:54 AM

Fountains of Wayne does a great acoustic cover of 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'...its hilarious.

My band also does a cover of Wham's - 'Careless Whispers'...check it out, www.myspace.com/immaculatemess

ADL Colin 01-02-2007 10:56 AM

My favorites would be:

Hendrix. All Along the Watchtower
Metallica. Turn the Page
Stanley Jordan. Eleanor Rigby (instrumental)

TG Rebecca 01-02-2007 11:49 AM

i agree.. madonna's version of that song was absolutely terrible.

crockett 01-02-2007 12:02 PM

Jane's Addiction did a pretty cool cover of "symphony for the devil"

crockett 01-02-2007 12:08 PM

also for some un-knowns both of these are pretty cool..

Acoustic Cover of Outkast's Hey Yea.. which I think is pretty kick ass

WebcamCash Anita 01-02-2007 12:50 PM

worst- take my breath away- jessica simspon

HammerALL 01-02-2007 12:52 PM

Imagine - A Perfect Circle

PornExcellenceAlison 01-02-2007 12:57 PM

Dinosaur Jr. also do a great cover of "Just Like Heaven" (originally by The Cure) that is pretty amazing, and everything Cat Power covers turns to magic. Check out her version of "Satisfaction" if you want to hear that song like it was the first time ever.

Mohawk Steve 01-02-2007 01:07 PM

I dig Kittie's cover of the Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell". Definetely not for everyone, but I can't get enough of it :thumbsup

Zebra 01-02-2007 01:15 PM

Erasure's EP ABBAesque
Van Halen - (oh)Pretty Woman
Manson - Sweet Dreams (are made of this)
Deftone's cover of Sade's Smooth Operator
Rob Zombie's cover of The Ramone's Bliztkrieg Bop

Zebra 01-02-2007 01:22 PM

Crap.. meant Deftones cover of Sade's No Ordinary Love. They never did Smooth Operator. They did do a good cover of Duran Duran's The Chauffeur though.

Lee 01-02-2007 01:46 PM

Talking of the Buckleys, I love Song to the Siren by Tim. I also like the cover by This Mortal Coil, but its not as good as the original.

I will probably be hounded out of GFY for this but I prefer Bryan Ferry singing Jealous Guy as opposed to Lennon. I also love La Vie en Rose by Grace Jones and Hurt by Johnny Cash.

reynold 01-02-2007 06:57 PM

Beatles once made a horrible cover for one of their albums.. I just can't find the pic.
