Do you have rich relatives who act poor?

I just spent the last two days with some VERY wealthy realatives. One, I have to admit, could buy everything she ever wanted (and she does) and still have millions, but the other 3 aren't doing so poorly themselves.

One of the three is my aunt - 70 years old, has had arthritis since she was 17, SO very crippled but just enjoys life. She always smiling even though she's been in a wheelchair for 20+ years and has live in help. She figures if SHE doesn't spend it, someone else will :) She won't fly but loves to take trips, go shopping, out to eat, etc.

My mother and my cousin are such spendthrifts that I want to puke. Both are millionaires and my cousin's bitching because she can't afford the ski lift tickets and food to visit her sister FOR FREE at her house in Aspen.

My mother bitches because she SO wants to see Alaska but the cruise she wants to take is $3K and she "just can't afford it". My aunt and I are looking at these two like "GIVE US A FUCKING BREAK!!". They are MISERABLE and I swear they just enjoy being able to complain about their hardships - WHICH DON'T EVEN EXIST.

Now, I'll admit, I'll bounce my last check when I die, but I'll be damned if I'm going to live my life making sure I don't buy TWO pairs of shoes that I really like.

/rant

I don't think people that complain about money are any worse than the others who complain about trivial, and silly, things in life. A complainer will always find something to complain about. That's their attitude.

anais 01-01-2007 12:17 PM

you're pathetic

anais 01-01-2007 12:22 PM

poor peaches is surrounded by all these illustrious ancestors and millionaires. she rubs elbows with heads of state and captains of industry. LOLOL

Well, that's true. They do find something to complain about ALL the time. Something's always wrong with the food, someone's clothes, hair, etc.

I was telling my aunt about your system for using the computer since her little knarled up hands have been useless for 30+ years. I would LOVE to get her hooked up - she says she's too old :( I think she'd have a great time - for all the shit she's gone through, she's truly one of the happiest people I know :)

CaptainHowdy 01-01-2007 12:22 PM

Alrighty then...

I MUST be special - you created an ID to do nothing but make posts to me :) :) :) :) :)

I'm going to go and brush my hair 100 times while staring at the mirror and saying "You're so pretty. You're so popular". Thank you for adding to my vanity :thumbsup

notabook 01-01-2007 12:42 PM

My grandmother on my father’s side acted that way and was one of the richest people I knew. For presents she would give a pack of socks or something else ridiculously cheap - she even drove a shoddy beaten-up truck from the 70’s… her wardrobe looked to have been comprised of stuff you would find from a homeless shelter. The only thing ‘fancy’ that she had that made you see her wealth was her house. Everything else was as frugal as could be.

Jarmusch 01-01-2007 12:45 PM

There's nothing wrong with being a cheap bastard.

Peaches 01-01-2007 12:52 PM

There was a guy who was well known in ATL. Keep millions in a bank accounts. Would die his hair with black shoe polish. He didn't drive, but had old beat up cars he'd have people drive him around in. He was friends (loan shark to) with one of the owners of a Mom/Pop company I worked for and he'd come in and bring us things like those little souvenier spoons you'd buy at the airport.

He had a 12K sq ft house and he only lived in 2 rooms - the kitchen and the living room. Kept all the blinds shut. One night, the entire house exploded and burned to the ground. For some reason, he was storing AVIATION FUEL in his basement!

They interviewed him on TV and he looked like some bum off the streets. Last I heard the Red Cross was helping him out ;) I'm sure he's passed away now - have no idea who he left it all to, all his family was dead.

Zuzana Designs 01-01-2007 12:54 PM

My parents are pretty wealty and act the same way .. they got me a 20 gift certificate for lowes lol .. They save there money for a rainy day they are always saying lol .. It has been raining here in NC for a long time now...

Oh c'mon - I doubt there's one person on this board who doesn't have relatives or friends who are rich and act dirt poor. I was ranting (notice the /rant on the page?) and I could post a whole lot more exciting things - and about people in the biz, not "unknown to everyone" relatives of mine - if I really wanted attention :)

I'm just wasting time until I have to go to dinner and the grocery and there is NOTHING on TV :(

Aviation fuel is kerosene. It's flammable, but not explosive.

Well, the house blew up and down - the newspaper said it was aviation fuel. I dunno. I'm just a dumb blonde who burned a roll of papertowels by turning on the wrong burner :thumbsup

Adult webmaster, lurker, and want to say hello. :thumbsup

Peaches your post really hit home for me.

I wonder if we are related, 'cause it sounds like we have the same relatives!

now mind you -- these are the same people who if they knew that we (my partner and i) did adult sites for a living would treat us like dirt. These are people that had their wealth and "bootstraps" as it were handed to them on a silver platter to give them a leg up in life. But when it came time to do the same for their children and needy family members, it was "Fuck You."

My partner and I literally bootstrapped ourselves online from dirt poor to being able to do nothing more than afford some domains and hosting. No one "invested" in our business or helped us out in any way.

Not one person in our respective families ever had to "bootstrap." Although it was demanded of us by our own families, some which are millionaires several times over and some that live very comfortably, but are not millionaires. NONE EVER HAD TO DO IT TOTALLY ON THEIR OWN WITH NO HELP WHATSOEVER. We did.

My partner and I are not rich, but by golly we are not going to give up hope. :thumbsup It's going to happen for us, and all I have to say is that if the tables ever turn I really hope that none of these people ever have the nerve to come to us for anything. Really. My heart is so cold now I could freeze the north pole. Lousy hypocrites will get nothing.

reynold 01-01-2007 05:56 PM

We're poor but we're quite comfortable acting wealthy sometimes. lol :pimp

Hmm.. kinda funny how people blame others for wasting their time..

I just read the tos and didn't see anywhere that requires us to enter every thread... Which leads me to believe your, 'wasted time' was a waste of time anyway.. and to come here and bitch about someone bitching, as you say, is hilarious..

Good to see you're one who uses your precious time wisely..

Have a lovely day.. :)

OMG, how true. I still remember my mother "breaking down" and sending me $500 when I literally had no food on the table when the ex-husband took off. When I paid her back she was SO thankful that she could FINALLY go get her tooth fixed that had been bothering her.....THIS WOMAN HAS MILLIONS!! And let me add that the only way she'd send me the $500 was if I sent her the title for my car, lol. :1orglaugh

The church is going to be VERY happy when she kicks the bucket as I'm sure it's all going "to God".

I have holes in my socks, but no way in hell I could fit in anything I had from the 70's. Or even 90's! :(

Martha Stewart showed how to darn socks. I usually throw them away except these are my "coat my feet with skin lotion" socks.

wyldblyss 01-01-2007 09:47 PM

My mom was the same way for the most part. She would tell me she "had to cut back on her spending" and give the kids $20 or nothing for their birthday, but show up for cake etc. wearing a $2,000 dress, $800 shoes and about 750K worth the jewelery. At Christmas, she would open up the many gifts I gave her, but she would not even give me a card....and I would go to the hairdressers (we had the same one) and she would show me gold bracelet or earrings my mother had given her for Christmas

Dee, there are times when I think we had the same mother ;) She DRIPS in diamonds and always spends money on clothes and shoes. And let's not forget, in FL, as soon as it hits 60 degrees, out come the furs :)

She hasn't given me a Christmas gift in 15+ years. She used to give my son a box of fudge that we gave to my Dad - who LOVES her fudge but she would never make it again if she knew it was going to him. All that time she thought *I* was eating it since my son didn't like it, so she at least gives me a box of fudge every Christmas (which goes to Dad ;) ). I always make sure to give her something at least semi-expensive to make her feel bad. Obviously a waste of money but I feel like a better person for about 1/2 a day.

This year she gave me an airbrushed picture of herself - I had asked for one for a "family" wall. She must have spent a fortune and it doesn't look at ALL like her, lol.

And another thing (you can tell I was burning inside that day) my cousin who's complaining about not having the money to eat and ski drives a new MB and gets her hair done at $300 a pop every 6 weeks (she has a TV show, so has to do the hair thing, but still.....). Her house is paid for and she usually eats at her mother's for free.
