... well, I like watching that cyclist lance amstrong, although I am not american myself but itīs unbelievable what power that guy has ... but I hate those french cocksuckers that stand at the side of the road and call him bad names, fucking stinking idiots.

... and just to add, california whine tastes so much better than the piss that comes out of france !!

The vast majority of the fans, the french included, like Lance.

Maybe 2 or 3 three years in every decade the top 5 california producers of cabernet based wines make something comparable with the best 1st growth bordeaux, but most years its not close on the top end OR in Quality to Price ratio wines. Dominus is probably the most consistently bordeaux like of California wines, the rest are just ultraconcentrated fruit bombs. California can't touch the best wines produced in Burgundy, Sauternes/Barsac, the Loire, Champagne, Alsace, St. Emilion/Pomerol, and probably will never be able to. California does produces loads of excellent and comparitively reasonably priced red zin's in many years though.

Its not just the French...everybody in Europe acts like that. When I came to North America and I went to see games I was surprised that they put the fans all together (from different teams). If you do that in Europe they will kill each other in less that 2 min...

RW316 07-23-2002 06:11 AM

lol... everyone is jealous

Dopy 07-23-2002 06:21 AM

Californian wines suit the unrefined palette ? you know those loud people who slurp bottle after bottle over a plate of steak and fries.

Fruit bombs just about sums it up although I do enjoy the odd Californian wine when halfway drunk.

Can't beat French wine .... sorry

... the Gutterboy knows something about wine, and I really appreciated his statement about it (maybe because we share the same throughts). ok, I was a bit too harsh judging frensh wines, but I was just pissed of with the way those frensh spectators were treating lance ... pardon me.

Gutterboy, I think we should get together one day and go through some bottles, I have a nice cellar filled up with some marvelous stuff here ...

Curious as to when you saw that? If it was in todays stage, don't tell me results 'cause I haven't seen it yet. The frenchies seemed happy to see him blasting up Mt. Ventoux though!

Sounds good to me! :glugglug I don't have anything against cali wines btw, I live 30 minutes from Napa & Sonoma and visit regularly. I just think many are grossly overpriced and lack the character of comparably or lesser priced old world wines.

Have you tried many Australian wines?

Yeah. Most recently a bottle of '96 Penfolds Bin 707 cab. It was almost black in color, very dense, very tannic, very concentrated, and had that thick rubber/eucalyptus on the nose that many Aussie shiraz have just after opening. Nice wine, lots of potential, but if I had a case I'd throw it in my wine storage locker and not even look at it again for 10-15 years. I've also had Penfolds Grange in a couple of vintages and some more moderately priced Barossa shiraz.

Ah, the '99 Greg Norman Cab/Merlot blend is without a doubt the best value in Cabernet based wine I've ever had. At $15-$19 a bottle it beats the pants off of CalCabs I've had that cost 2-4x that. Haven't had the '00 yet. His Chardonnay is nice too, not ultra-oaky like many CalChards.

Overall the heavy rubber/eucalyptus nose on many Aussie wines tends to turn me off, but thats just personal preference. If you like that style there are many great wines to be had.

Ahh, I see what you are talking about now! They didn't show the taunting during live coverage of the Ventoux stage, which is why I questioned it.

Guess they were angry at the way Lance showed Beloki up when he tried to attack at the bottom of the mountain. That was just classic, definitely as good as the way he looked back at Jan Ulrich just before taking off at the bottom of l'Alpe de Huez last year.

Morons!

Penfolds make some great wines, the Grange 95 was not their best year the 91 on the other hand is great, i have a couple of bottles, the 707 is a nice drop and so are some of their other wines.
i have a wine cellar at my house ( very unusuall for australia )
living here makes me biased but when it comes to price/value
australia is up there with the best!
:2 cents:

"definitely as good as the way he looked back at Jan Ulrich"

yes, itīs that illusive second when the whole thing gets decided ... excellent piece of sports ...

btw: I have a TV card on my office computer, so I can go and watch the TOUR live ... itīs sitting right on the top right corner of the monitor ... I couldnīt see myself watching it at home, kinda hard to sit 5-6 hours in front of the telly ... LOL

Use them all the time in salads, much better than vinigar. And cheaper.

Only kidding:1orglaugh
