How is pod casting different than letting someone DL anything else ?

Ya I'm asking this about 18 months too late. Whats the story ?

Sounds "hip" I guess. Maddox had a funny list of Internet terms he hated:

Podcast: Someone had the revolutionary idea of taking a compressed audio file and putting it online. Yeah, doesn't sound so sexy when I describe it for what it is, does it you morons? It would have been a great idea if streaming audio wasn't already around for over a decade before the word "podcast" entered the lexicon. Man, I can't stand the word "lexicon." Talking about all these shitty words has made me start using shitty words. I'm so pissed, I just slammed the door shut on some kid's nuts.

Podcasting: It's snob for "streaming audio."

well, the way I have seen it is this

a person creates a podcast and posts it to the web, the ipod is connected to the dock and downloads the latest "podcast updates", which is basically a xml file the ipod software goes and checks updates on, like this http://www.friskyradio.com/podcast/index.xml

so, it is an xml file for ipods with audio files as the titles of posts, if there are new posts, the ipod grabs the audio or video file linked

Podcasts aren't streaming. And they can be either audio or video.

Podcasts typically have "episodes" released at intervals. Using iTunes, you can subscribe to a podcast. iTunes will automatically download each new episode and load it on to your iPod when you dock it. There are other ways to get podcasts, but this is the easiest.

For example, CNET has a daily tech news audio podcast. Every night, I dock my iPod to charge it and download the podcast. Suicide Girls releases a new video every week via podcast. I even get weekly italian lessons via podcast.

I think the difference is that you cast the pod instead of downing the load.

It's not rocket surgery (unless you are operating on rockets)...
