3d Game Designing

I was thinking about dabbling in the 3D game design side of things for a while.. Maybe come up with a small time online game. What software packages are there out there for this sort of thing?

Right now I am fooling with 3d Studio Max, but I don't know if I am going to be able to import what I create in there, into the game environment. So I would like to know what software I need to verse myself in before dedicating too much time learning the wrong one

Any help is appreciated.. Thanks a bunch

Will this game involve chasing sleazydream around in a circle while shooting rubber bands at his penis?

Can I reserve a copy?

I think most game designers use Maya...

Maya or 3d Studio mostly...

Id say that people who dont have any cares about how many polygons, rendering time, etc... Use Maya... those guys are the ones that pop out 3d Cartoons, etc... like Action Man.

Most 3d game developers nowadays use 3d Studio, Maya is taking some of them now tho as the new game engines are coming out.

Most of my buds use 3d Studios, that work for gaming companies

3DS Max was holding its own for some time but most of the places I used to work at that used Max are now switching to Maya. A long time ago I was using Alias and then they'd switch to MAX, but now it's going back the other way.

Your best bet if you're trying to learn is to get into MAX. If you decide to mess around with one of the 3D engines out there you'll find that most of them can get stuff exported out of MAX, but it's not as simple for Maya stuff.

If you have any questions about the game dev world feel free to hit me up on ICQ. I was in the fray for a long time before I finally went off and started my own thing. Check out our showcase at http://www.howintheworld.com for a few examples of some of the games I've worked on (what, you didn't think I was gonna take the opportunity and plug? :Graucho).

It's a great business to get into if you don't mind the hours. Oh yeah, and check out www.gamasutra.com for a good site devoted to game development.

TOP TGP... I build levels for Counterstrike and Halflife.... I use worldcraft (now known as 'Hammer'). I take it you use Unread ED? I also make textures and Sounds n stuff..... Not too good with 3D modeling or coding though.

I want to start up a new HL mod... But not necessarily fighting. Only a place people can go and do shit, chit chat, meet, etc... like a big 3D meeting place....

ICQ me if your interested in working on something like this....

Jak, your work looks awesome.. You are exactly who I was looking at talking to actually.. My ICQ is 9530782, I would love to sit down and pick your brain for a bit, maybe even work with you on a future project..

As for level designing, yea that is a blast. I started out doing .wads for the original version of Doom, and then Doom2. I think personally I enjoyed making them for Duke3d more than anything, I had some monster levels for that game.. and then I dabbled in Quake a little bit, but that is where it all ended..
