Is the new 07' 335i A better buy than the 530i?

I'm looking at this years new BMW's... It appears to me as if the new 335i coup is a better performance buy with 300hp, inline 6 with dual turbochargers, than the 530i 255 HP... The price tags only differ by about 3k (with the 5 series being more). Who has experience with either? I currently have a 540I and swear by the 5 series, as everybody has a 3, but I definitely want a sportier feel. Am I incorrect in thinking the 335 is a better buy than the 530?

0-60 in 5.2 on a 3 series? That's what Car and Driver says and I tend to believe them.

Also, what other cars are comparable in the $40k range that are worth a look? C&D also says that the 335 is the best in class.

Any input is appreciated :)

Infiniti m45 :) i love it

I'm a BIG fan of the 335, but it all really comes down to what ratio of size to sportiness you want. Personally, the 335 is better for me. It's got the zip the 530 doesn't for when you want to do a little spirited driving and or fly by that asshole on the highway and doesn't give up too much in the way of suspension comfort.

Still, if you're more of a commuter type driver and want the extra leg room and size the 530 is worth considering.

my bud owns a beemer dealership... he raves about the 335i

xato 12-19-2006 03:43 AM

i think its a general question what kind of car you like.
3 series or 5 series is totally different.

the 335i however is top notch, my buddy has one and he is really crazy about it.

shermo 12-19-2006 03:57 AM

I was looking at the G35 Sedan (I already have a 2 door Z)...I can get a fully loaded for about 37k....I see a larger BHP of 306, but I don't think it's nearly as quick off the line and the lifetime maintanance of the BMW is appealing...What are your thoughts on that car as well?

I find GFY is full of car experts :)

BlueDesignStudios 12-19-2006 04:12 AM

335 looks awesome IMO

Gentle_Ben 12-19-2006 04:13 AM

Don't know a TON about bmws, but what about a M3 (sick car). The msrp is 48k, but maybe if you get a 2005?

emthree 12-19-2006 04:16 AM

335 is better choice for what you want.
The motors on the 545/550 is way better, but they are too expensive.

Trust me..I thought of this... But this car is for my wife and much sportier than the 335 would be too much. We are also wanting a brand new car as we purchased a used BMW 540I and it's been a serious problem for us (hence the reason we need a new car). We also want to lease as every car I've bought has caused problems, while my leases have been amazing. We also like the free maintanance that the new BMW's come with. Also, I want to keep the payments right around $600 a month and 48k would be around $800.

The 335i is 5.2...5.0 on the Car and Driver roadtest. :thumbsup

Fresh 12-19-2006 04:39 PM

5.2????? try closer to 4.8.

After waiting for 2 months to receive my order, I finally picked it up 3 weeks ago.

Ive owned a 328Ci, an M3 and drove a 2005 530i for about 6 months. By far the 335i takes the cake. Blistering fast, handles like you wouldnt believe and gets great gas mileage 20/30.

I dont regret it one bit. :thumbsup

I've owned a lot of 3 series over the years and would consider them more of a drivers car and the 5 series more of a commuter car.

shermo 12-19-2006 05:07 PM

Looks like I'm seeing the light... I was being stubborn about going from my 5 to a 3, but I'm starting to see the upsides now. :)

Not really when you see what I'm going for... I am coming froma 540I that was quicker than the old 3 series due to the 8 banger... The space isn't that drastic, as I own a Z and it's smaller than a tea cup.

Max... If I wanted a Mercedes with any kind of balls, I'd be looking at 80 G's. I like the agressive stance of the new BMW's so that's what I'm looking at. Unless I drop $100k on a car, I'm sticking with the BMW's...Better driving machines for a better price. :thumbsup

Love the car, but nothing near as fast as a 335.

nba4life2k 12-19-2006 05:20 PM

335i has a little more than 300hp. Its been reported to have anywhere from 320-340hp. Look at some dyno results from tests done and ull see.

Viper2K1 12-19-2006 05:21 PM

I've read the 5-series is gonna change in 2009

sherm, just to give you a heads up... they start at 40,600 but with a couple add ons its easy to get around 45-46. Mine cost 48,600 i think.

I have friends that specialize in leasing. ICQ me if I can help with anything.

emthree 12-19-2006 05:27 PM

Fuck this thread is making me want a 335 now.
I seen one yesterday. I could only imagine how it'll look modded.

thats true. the dyno tests show 299 lb. torque AT THE WHEELS! Getting that much torque at the wheels from a 300 lb. ft. torque engine is unheard of. Same applies to the HP. Puts 275hp to the wheels.

Heres the Automobile Mag article http://www.automobilemag.com/feature...i_dynamometer/

How much would a lease be on a 335?

Platinumpimp 12-19-2006 06:04 PM

335i engine is a fucking masterpiece, testdrove it about 5 weeks ago. Faster than a 545i easily.

And take into consideration that 499 is for a base model. It will be hard finding a base model to lease.

As for the miles, the best thing to do (IMO of course) is not to worry about passing miles on a lease. I usually drive as much as i want and sell the car instead of returning it. If you list the car bout 2 months before you need to get rid of it, you will find a buyer willing to pay your asking amount (which should kinda be what you owe the dealer + down payment for new car). This way you dont have to worry about miles or wear and tear. Plus youre left with a down for the next car and if the value is there, a couple hundred in ur pocket :2 cents:
