Always Back-up Your Harddrives!!!

Just recovering from the worst weekend ever.

My main C: drive literally blew up! It made the crazies sounds.
I had only back up things that were important to me like photos of my family.

I lost all a major chunk of content, contacts, un/pw, submit passes, programs that were customized to my flavor, videos and many more things that come up as I work.

I lost my ARLES gallery maker. I lost all my email archives.

Oh well, I see this as a new beginning.

I am using Open Office, Thunderbird email and many new programs I would have never used.

I'll be contacting a lot of my sponsors throughout the week.

This won't always save your data but if more people checked the S.M.A.R.T. status on their drives this kind of thing wouldn't happen so often.

It probably takes less than a minute to download, install, and check your drives.

No Problem. I'm sure you'll be glad you used it when you see one of your drives is going bad and buy another before the bad one completely fails on you.

DutchTeenCash 12-18-2006 02:54 PM

I've lost so many hard drives back in the day that it wasn't funny. So I got smart.

1) All of my links, passwords, etc, are all stored on a local start page - in HTML. Every Saturday I burn this start page (now it's own site really) to CD.
2) Any pictures I take are backed up to CD the same day.
3) Any pictures I download from Al Gore's Interwebby thinger I store in one folder on my computer, and every saturday I upload these to a server.

Email is all done through company email, and my personal email goes through gmail.

I keep all of the original copies of all software I need.

I can loose a hard drive and start operating off of a new computer instantly without skipping a beat.

sniperwolf 12-19-2006 09:40 PM

sucks not to... hope things work out great man!

LiveDose 12-19-2006 09:42 PM

I learned that lesson a long long time ago. I lost a laptop HD this year and had everything backed up luckily....

Illicit 12-19-2006 09:45 PM

Acronis True Image Workstation - Use it.

TheSenator 12-19-2006 09:47 PM

Managed to stabalize my harddrive for a few hours. Pulled out a lot of stuff that I needed. Still life is sucking.

NemesiS876 12-19-2006 09:48 PM

It cost me $2500 but they were able to save 100% of my fried drive

bdld 12-20-2006 01:19 AM

that fucking sucks, it's like starting over from scratch.

kane 12-20-2006 01:42 AM

I got a virus that ended up frying my hard drive about 6 months ago. I lost a ton of shit and it was a real pain in the ass to replace it. I bought a program called Ghost 10 that makes a mirror of your hard drive and use it every couple of weeks. It's pretty sweet.

terrible situation, the percentage of the HDD crashs is very high, so the only one solution is backup. I'm using personally the freeware archival utility www.7-zip.com, which i may configure and use it in the my BAT files, so my backups are small and crypted via 256b AES (7z is very feature rich compressor)

starpimps 12-22-2006 10:35 PM

hrmn i should start backing up my harddrives
this scares me

just_beginner 12-22-2006 10:46 PM
