IA Miami Mess UP

I don't know about you all, but whoever booked this years summer Internext should have really made sure the hotel has high speed internet access. Well the Westin does not unless you would like to dial up via the phone line and a per minute rate charge.

I just found that out, I never bothered asking assuming (yeah yeah) that a huge hotel like that would offer high speed Internet Access.

So this should be some fun, unless you have the Presidents or Executive Suite for 500 bucks per night, about 1000 webmasters will be dialing out by phone to check their emails. I am shocked.

Well, I am looking for an invite in one of those 500 dollar suites so I can check my email without paying 20 bucks everytime I dial up.

Wow, I don't want to be the person who booked that hotel after the convention.

:ak47: :BangBang:

beemk 07-20-2002 04:46 PM

... waits for the pervert comments from webmasters with the $500 suites.

BVF 07-20-2002 04:50 PM

OH MY GOD!!!! You ACTUALLY have to DIAL UP just to check your email in between partying and porn stars? Boo Hoo.

**cue the violins**

beemk 07-20-2002 04:51 PM

anyone with a sprint phone should check this out, its not very high speed but it just uses your sprint minutes for the internet access and you can use it pretty much anywhere with your laptop.

Dax 07-20-2002 04:52 PM

Who wants to bother with email ???

I thought the internext was just for that... get away from the PC meet up with some old friends, make new and make some good business!!

Mr.Fiction 07-20-2002 04:53 PM

You have a point. Maybe some of you don't care, but it's a webmaster convention, why wouldn't they use a place with high speed access?

When I travel, that's one of the first things I look for in a hotel.

FYI

FlyntDigital is going to have a "stats" and e-mail station set up on the trade show floor. We'll have 5-6 computers set up with high speed connections for everyone to use :)

Ice water and asprin will also be availalbe for those of you who are to hungover to see straight :)

We also have a Governers Suite that will be open for drinks and snacks for several hours each night. If anyone wants to bring up their laptop and use the high speed connection, you're more than welcome to!

Sounds good.

why not setup a dialup account with a nation wide provider?
Sprint or AOL should work. Just call them and ask for the local number to dial when in Flordia. Why would being on dialup for a few days matter?

it works ok, sometimes hard to get connected on peak times, good for checking e-mail only. my speed is usually about 8 to 11k.

you have to get a different plan you cant use the same plan you use with the cell phone if you get the PCI modem.

It matters a lot for some people. It depends what you need to do every day to keep your site(s) going. If you need to be able to upload and download movies or other big files while on the road, then high speed access is a must.

Dawgy 07-20-2002 06:12 PM

i have a suite and will most likely let friends come & check stats and email.

maybe i can charge. stats for blowjobs. yeah.

Kimmykim 07-20-2002 06:43 PM

Hadn't heard that steffie, it's a shame -- tho the Venetian isn't really any better in Vegas.

Shaw Internet will be serving lunch in our booth daily -- pizza, subs, that sort of thing, and we are planning to have a wireless station setup there, barring any technical difficulties.

For anyone who's not set up a booth before, the potential for technical, and other difficulties is myriad, so I am saying we plan to have it. :)

KingK7 07-20-2002 07:45 PM

Haha, kinda reminds me, not sure if it was in New Orleans or in Miami, but I had this local dial-up #, think the ISP was Earthlink.

So a local call would be free, problem was the fucking thing disconnected all the time, or simply did not get through. And each and every time you so much as PRESS that "out"-button (9 I think it was), the hotel charged a dollar. Came to a pretty sweet $213 for 3 days worth of shitty dialup.

Brad Mitchell 07-20-2002 09:23 PM

That's pretty fucking retarded considering the cost AND the fact that it's a new property.

Sweet. Im gonna Back Orifice those motherfuckers and key trap every single thing that happens on those machines.

I cant be the first person to think of this.

I do it to every public machine that allows me to do it. Its fuuuuun.

You should see the sparkle in my eye when I see a unsecured machine in public with internet access.

steffie 07-20-2002 10:01 PM

I'll be walking around with my laptop tapping into you alls fast speed access lines he he... thanks for the offers.

I called back and they told me that local calls are NOT free. Its an 83 cent charge for the first 2 minutes blah blah, I quit listening to her after that. I had that problem once before and also had a whopping 200 buck charge, same problem, couldn't get thru and for ever try I paid a per minute charge. OUCH

Ok, so I am bitching, but you know, its a pretty new hotel and it is hosting a huge webmaster convention. Just amazing, Best Western in Ohio had it (went there last week) why not the Westin?

So Flynt Digital you WILL see me with lapping dog in hand

steffie the first hour of dial up is free (check my post i made about this). I dont see why people wont handle buisness beofre leaving the office anyways. I guess someon peoples companies arent on automatic....it feels good to go away a few days and see thousands of new dollars in your accounts..another thing. If your company cant survive without you being at your computer for a few days you might need to reconsider going...

The point of the thread is that the hotel for a webmaster event should have high speed access. I travel quite a bit and I generally make sure that the hotel's I'm going to have high speed access so that I can do what needs to be done while I'm on the road.

Most people who travel on business would expect that this hotel is going to have high speed access. I'm glad that a few people here took the time to let us know that this isn't the case.

TDF 07-20-2002 11:28 PM

i agree with this statement but high speed is a luxury and not a necessity...as I have stated I called and they told me all they have is dialup connection from the hotel.

steffie 07-20-2002 11:30 PM

Actually yeah I can leave for a few days without checking my account. However I have a personal live and I do have family, pets and a house sitter.

Sometimes it is easier to get a hold of me via e-mail than my cell phone. For questions regarding personal things I leave behind. And uhm,, I am also meeting up with a few members for a shoot so yup they have my cell number but they also have my email in case they cannot get a hold of me.

Plus its easier to email all those guys in what room I will be staying than trying to track them down one by one via cell phone.

It's just easy for me, convinient I might add. I am happy you are a big company with people who take care of your everyday business needs and when I get to your level I will throw that damn laptop and the member emails out the window just like you. But until this day arrives I need to at least make sure for about 5 minutes per day that I don't have one of these

"Dear Steffie,
I lost my password could you please look it up now, since I really need to look at you"

Or maybe I should just go with TgP's he he so I never worry eh?

Anyway its really not important why I would like to have Internet access to my account while traveling the question here is "Why in the world would you rent a huge new hotel for a huge WEBMASTER convention without free Internet Access to those attending.

Peace out, see ya in Miami. Me with my lapping do you with your fun and 1000's of new dollars in the pocket. Buy me dinner????????

beemk 07-20-2002 11:32 PM

you should get a 2way pager steffie.

CoolE 07-20-2002 11:33 PM

I use an AOL account expressly for this purpose. This way I can travel anywhere in North America and stay in any hotel and be able to check my email without any additional fees except the 50 or 75 cents that a local call costs. How much longer does it take to check email via dial-up vs dsl? Not much.

I hear ya though; it would have been a good idea for the show organizers to have made sure every room had a on-the-road dsl option for those of you who are into it.

But I think most attendees and frequent travelers probably do something similar to what I do to avoid these problems.

Just my :2 cents:

kmanrox 07-21-2002 12:55 AM

if you are not enebriated (sp?) to the point where you cannot see or think or function to check your e-mail, you are doing something severly wrong....

Massivecock 07-21-2002 01:49 AM

I phoned they said they have highspeed!
