DVD vs. HD-DVD - See the difference...

Stumbled upon an article about DVD vs. HD-DVD.
Check the link and mouse over the images to see the difference...

Think vhs vs. dvd...

If you move your mouse in and out of #3 really fast, it looks like they're really clapping.

very Interesting, cant say I love it:2 cents:

Martin3 12-15-2006 10:47 AM

That's not HD-DVD, was an HD broadcast which isn't the same(or quite as good).

Then i guess this is a "MISS" for CrunchGear...

tony286 12-15-2006 10:51 AM

the big thing I noticed was darker and alittle sharper.until they agree on a format alot people arent going to buy in. Who wants to have $500 dollar machine they make nothing for. Remember beta.

tranza 12-15-2006 10:54 AM

Damn, that looks like quite a difference...

woj 12-15-2006 11:18 AM

yea, huge difference, but hardly surprising since HD has almost 2x the resolution of dvd...

Dirty Dane 12-15-2006 11:24 AM

That must be a bad dvd player

Flow 12-15-2006 11:59 AM

I have a HD DVD player and the picture is so good I almost can't stand watching standard DVDs any more. Panasonic projector to a 105" screen = incredible. that has to be Regular cable TV (I think LOTR was on TNT HD the other night) because the LORT trilogy is not on HD DVD yet. And I agree, HDTV is great but HD DVD is 10x better.

BAKO 12-15-2006 12:08 PM

there is alot of difference

Mr. Romance 12-15-2006 12:10 PM

it is alot more clear for sure

4Pics 12-15-2006 01:03 PM

I didn't know Lotr was out on hddvd yet. I haven't seen it in the stores.

notabook 12-15-2006 01:15 PM

Is 480p really that blurry for DVDs? Or upscaled DVDs? I don't remember LOTR maps being nearly that blurry, will have to watch later and see.

Regardless HD is fucking awesome, depending on your viewing distance. If your TV is back far enough (say 20-25ft) you’ll notice no real difference between 1080p or 480p.

Jace 12-15-2006 01:25 PM

like notabook said, the regular dvd is NOT that blurry

I just put it in to check, and on my piddly 32" screen I can see just as clear as their HD example on that page

Paranoid_android 12-15-2006 01:26 PM

that I am sure was not a DVD source for the DVd part of those pics.

evildick 12-15-2006 01:30 PM

It's funny because my brother has a PS3 and he was trying to figure out why the copy of Talladega Nights that came with it looked not much better than regular DVD. He said his HD cable channels looked better. Turns out Talladega is a horrible quality transfer, going by the reviews on the net.

Blu-ray really needs to get their shit together if they expect to beat HD-DVD, which is currently outselling them, software-wise, almost 10 to 1.

I've never heard of a poor quality HD-DVD transfer, but blu-ray seems to have tons of them.

Flow 12-16-2006 10:37 PM

To my understanding, to make a Blu-Ray disk, you have to make a HD DVD disk, the format that to get to the Blu-Ray format. And the more times you change formats, you are bound to get fuck ups.

Hehehe I had beta. And a LOT of tapes. For some reason it really caught on in my country for a few years.
I bet it`s still somewhere in my garage.

Juilan 12-16-2006 11:22 PM

Pretty cool, I see clarity, more color saturation and increased DOF with HD DVD grabs.

notabook 12-16-2006 11:32 PM

I checked out the quality of the LOTR map on my hdtv crt projection screen and it looks far better than at that page. Definately not 'hd quality' but it wasn't nearly that fucking blurry. I think that is a viral page in order to try and sell the idea of HD (since many simply are not that interested in HD).

gecko 12-17-2006 12:01 AM

Wow.. but is that really from a dvd source?

Matt_WildCash 12-17-2006 12:23 AM

Personally i'll wait till the duel Blueray / HD-ROM drives come out, not buying one or the other. Get a machine that plays both.

Matt

Except that a screen triple the size will look as good from three times the distance as a screen showing 480p...

Vitasoy 12-17-2006 01:25 AM

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is out.. think I'll be picking one up.

madawgz 12-17-2006 01:42 AM

wow thats a big difference :)

Sebastian Sands 12-17-2006 02:26 AM

ofcourse its a big difference, he clearly says he blew the dvd still grab up to match the HD dvd resolution, what happens if you blow a still grab up?... ding ding ding , it gets blurry.. the only way you can make a true comparisement is to watch it yourself on your screen.. just my 2 cents

Sebastian

OzMan 12-17-2006 02:46 AM

HD-DVD, BLU-RAY, ULTRA-HD, 3D-HD, EVD from China and VMD from India etc....

Forget the VHS/BETA battle...It's gonna be nuts for the next few years until the dust settles on a single HD format if it ever will. :Oh crap

There's several differences between Blu-ray and Hd-dvd. The biggest difference is the max average bandwidth. Currently, dvds have a max of around 11Mbit/s.

HD-DVDs have ~26Mbit/s

Blu-ray has ~52Mbit/s

Technologically, Blu-ray is better, it has a bigger bitrate and a larger disc capacity relative to the HD-DVD. I think the greater Mbit/s is a strong reason for sony to choice Blu-ray for the PS3. Within games, you can have story line sequences that are in true HD. They can also do this because the storage on the Blu-ray is 25Gigs for a single sided disc, and 50gigs for the dual layer blu-ray discs. The PS3's, resistance of man, I think fills up almost 25 gigs.

These new gaming systems are insane and the next round of games for the xbox360 and ps3 are going to be ridiculous.

If you're looking for a ps3, we have a contest, check it out. :thumbsup

-K.

Cash 12-18-2006 05:22 AM

The difference is clear for sure, if that DVD source is quality, which I somehow doubt .... But no doubt HD is an excellent choice nowadays!

ianbravo 12-22-2006 08:57 PM

i think that HD-DVD is going to win out the HD disc wars. Xbox 360 has an HDdvd player in its system, PS3 has a bluray

Yep I agree, just got the hd dvd adapter and it's amazing.

Martin3 12-22-2006 09:10 PM

Why are so many retards posting this link on various boards lately calling it hd-dvd vs dvd.:disgust

No where does it state hd-dvd. It's upconverted dvd vs a cable/sat HD broadcast. Neither of which can hold a candle to real hd-dvd or blueray.

NemesiS876 12-22-2006 09:14 PM

I must buy it

sharp 12-22-2006 09:17 PM

world of difference.

Spunky 12-22-2006 09:21 PM

Does seem to make things more crystal clear
