Elliptical OR Treadmill?

I'm in the market to get either an elliptical or treadmill for my new home. I've been reading up a little on advantages/disadvantages and it seems an elliptical burns more calories and is easier on the joints than a treadmill. I'm leaning towards an elliptical but have not decided yet. Initially I wanted a treadmill but the reviews tell me to choose otherwise. What do you suggest? or have? I'd be interested in hearing from people that do have both a treadmill and elliptical or either really.

:thumbsup

go outside and run

Elliptical, better on the joints and gives you a better workout as well.

I always had elliptical, treadmill (full blown feature ones) and standing/sitting stationary bikes. Elliptical was always the best for burning more calories.

go try them both and pick which one you like better. But like Jace said, I find going outside, riding, hiking, walking or jogging is about 300x's more enjoyable and you're more likely to keep it up if you enjoy doing it.

The Bowflex Treadclimber is a sweet machine. A little pricey, but you can never go wrong with Bowflex IMO.

That is correct.

Easier on joints, and burns more calories. So it's the best way to go. I still have my treadmill, but I've been looking at buying my own elliptical soon.

:2 cents:

I use the elliptical, the lifefitness gym model one. It's pretty cool, it has touch screen and you can watch tv on it. My apartment has a pretty nice gym with around 50 ellipticals, treadmills and bikes, all Lifefitness stuff. And Lifefitness stations for your body. Check them out.

I am on the eliptical everyday. It's easy on the joints as mentioned above.

Elliiptical all the way. You can't go wrong, and the workout is so much more enjoyable!

A car (I had to be the first wise guy to say it).

when I do my cardio, if I'm not on the rowing machine it's the elliptical. You get 10x the workout on an elliptical than on a treadmill.

Elipltical actually burns less than a treadmill.

I think so too.
Never really looked into it.

i agree... the eliptical burns less calories.. and its not possible to definatively say one burns more than the other since incline and resistance vary. when i haven't worked out for a long time and need to lose weight (like right now for example) - i always start on the eliptical because its easier.

definately better for the knees though. its irrelevant what a sales brochure says. you are not talking about some major difference in calories burned in comparing one to the other, as it depends entirely on you and your effort.

do it for your knees and joints.

Unless it's too cold or a bad neighborhood, your best solution imho for cardio (apart from swimming) is to walk briskly (~4.0) outside for at least an hour daily.

I am finding low to moderate intensity over an hour does a lot more for me than a 30-45 minute high intensity workout ever did. Something about the adrenalin/dopamine or body machinery kicking in to overdrive after 50 minutes or so seems to be the reason.

Also I used to get a lot of knee and ankle/heel problems when running or even walking on treadmills. Since it is not a natural movement it is easy to over extend your joints. Also since you will soon be bored shitless even with tv/music, your body will find ways of cheating, thus further reducing the effectiveness and increasing the likelihood of you straining something and being out of action for a couple weeks or more.

I like the elliptical, but get a much better workout on a treadmill.

with an elliptical you can also do reverse mode with incline/resistance that will whoop your ass lol

If you're overweight, treadmills/stairclimbers are a bad idea

dynastoned 12-14-2006 01:36 AM

i use them both.. 30 mins at 8.0 on the tredmill and 5.0 on the elliptical for 30 mins and im good.

Are you a competitive runner? 8.0 for 30 minutes is impressive.
