St. Pierre vs Hughes 3 UFC in Canada!

http://www.canada.com/topics/sports/...5335e1&k=88845

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Ultimate Fighting Championship is coming to Canada with current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre taking on former champion Matt Hughes in Montreal on April 7.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the UFC's Canadian debut in speaking to reporters Tuesday on the eve of the Ultimate Fight Night card Wednesday (8 p.m.) on a U.S. military base.

St. Pierre stripped Hughes of his 170-pound belt in dominant fashion Nov. 18 in Sacramento, scoring a second-round technical knockout to avenge a submission loss to the American in October 2004.

The 25-year-old from Montreal is set to make his first title defence in Las Vegas on Feb. 3 against Matt Serra, the winner of Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter reality TV show.

Making the St. Pierre-Hughes rubber match in Montreal the UFC's first show in Canada is a no-brainer for the mixed martial arts circuit. St. Pierre will draw fans to the Bell Centre while Hughes is a ready-made villain, certain to help pump up the fight.

The former champion did his bit to muddy Canada-U.S. relations prior to UFC 65: Bad Intentions in Sacramento when he sneered at Canada's foreign policies and questioned Canadians' hearts. St. Pierre also was upset at remarks Hughes reportedly made on a Los Angeles radio station about the French's lack of warrior spirit.

"How fun is that going to be," White said mischieviously Tuesday of the Montreal fight. "How crazy do you that place going to be that night? How do you think it's going to be for Hughes when he walks in with 16,000 Canadians in there? They're going to kill him."

The anti-Hughes vibe will probably only serve as fuel to the former champion's fire. Hughes is a canny veteran fighter who has plenty to prove after being dismantled by St. Pierre.

Montreal, meanwhile, has already proved to be fertile ground for MMA via the TKO shows run by St. Pierre's manager Stephane Patry.

St. Pierre is already enjoying the perks of being a champion. The UFC gave him a Hummer for winning the title, no doubt a welcome but somewhat awkward gift for someone who had just splurged on a Nissan truck.

Next week, he and several other UFC big-name fighters are touring three U.S. three military sites.

"He's amazing. He's such a great champion for us," White said. "He's good-looking, he's in great shape, he's one of the nicest human beings you could ever meet. . . . Everybody loves Georges St. Pierre."

White also hopes to have Canada host an Ultimate Fight Night televised card next year.

Anthony 12-13-2006 07:43 AM

Oh don't even start.

I get no love from you anymore. It's Hiya, and Seeya Later.

Like that one special weekend didn't exist for both of us, and I'm left with nothing but memories of that torrid affair.

:(

There was a big fight here in Vancouver last week and I know nothing about UFC...beyond your threads here, but my neighbour and yoga teacher is very good friends with Maurico Motta Gomez and his son Roger Gracie and they were over in my building visiting her while in town for Gracie's fight. They loved the shopping in Vancouver. Gracie won but it was his first fight in this discipline and his dad was very nervous apparently.

That was BodogFight... Roger Gracie armbarred Ron Waterman, pretty impressive.

Roger is a World BJJ Champion, and the largest Gracie fighting. :)

He tore apart Ron Waterman in his first MMA fight.

It was the Bodog Fights Russia Vs USA, which is kinda funny as it was held in Vancouver, Canada. LOL

American Top Team's Mario "Big Hurt" represented well winning his bout too! :)

pradaboy 12-13-2006 08:13 AM

BTW Anthony... at the BodogFight event I think I heard one of those interviewers say at the end when he was interviewing Roger Gracie that Fedor Emelianenko just signed up to the BodogFight organisation. Is that true?

Heard about that the other day, Herring is gonna be a force in the Heavyweight division.

I'm not even gonna go into Rampage!!! Okay, I will. Bringing in Rampage gives Liddell a chance to fight and get a win from the ass whopping he took from Rampage.

VoteForPedro 12-13-2006 08:18 AM

So, who is fighting tonight?

Yep, Fedor will be fighting for Bodogfights. He has a clause in his contract with PRIDE, letting him fight MMA in Russia for any organization. Smooth move, imho.

What I find REALLY EXCITING, is that Mirko Cro Cop, is being courted by the UFC to fight in the USA, and is about to make his decision any day now.

Crocop in the UFC? OMFG, talk about a coup!!!

Vitasoy 12-13-2006 08:26 AM

Sweet. I can't wait to see it.

SxDx 12-13-2006 08:30 AM

damn...that'll be fun to watch

HAPPYPEEKERS 12-13-2006 09:58 AM

I will watch Hughes get his ass stomped like a little school girl again.. No Problem!!

What ever happened to the fight between dana white and Tito?? anyone heard anything??

ajrocks 12-13-2006 10:03 AM

Thanks for the link!
GSP is going to kick Hughes to the mat again!

RealityWife 12-13-2006 01:55 PM

Hughes will work on blocking the leg kicks which was the major reason he lost the second fight, other than being way too over confindent. Cant wait for this fight..but looking more forward to Tito Vs. Liddell

HammerALL 12-13-2006 02:01 PM

Holy Fuck - this is awesome

baddog 12-13-2006 02:06 PM

sucker for punishment?

I will admit I don't really follow UFC, but I did see the last fight and Hughes never stood a chance.

Know when to say when.

Here's a short history lesson on Hughes for the new fans. Prior to his first fight with BJ in which he lost, he was always critizied for not training very often. Rumorer was he only trained for about 2-3 weeks before a fight. After his loss to BJ, he changed hes training around and improved a hell of alot.

After his loss to GSP, he stated he never really goes in with a game plan, just kind of wings once the fight starts. Point is it'll be great to see how much a solid game plan effects the fight.

Though, I really don't think it'll do much good. Matt got an upper body lock on GSP with both hands locked together and GSP just broke out like it was nothing and people aren't suppose to be able to do that when I guy like Hughes wraps you up. :1orglaugh

Thanks bro, I've been a hardcore fan for many moons. :thumbsup

Its all but announced now that Crocop has signed with the UFC. This is huge news not only for the obvious reason that we get to see Mirko tear through the UFC heavies with highlight-worthy regularity, but this also signals that the Dana and Ferritto bros. are willing to step up their game and grab some of the great, but expensive, fighters that aren't already on the roster.

Lance69 12-13-2006 09:05 PM

Dude I am so gonna do everything in my power to go to that!!!!
