How much should a 20amp circuit cost me?

In a rack, how much should I pay for setup and monthly fee?

Phil21 12-11-2006 03:57 PM

depends on which facility, and where it's located

Miss Nancy 12-11-2006 03:58 PM

42u locking cab, 20amp circuit included, 10mbps included

Zero set up fee/ $600.00/month

Phil21 12-11-2006 03:58 PM

and what voltage :)

New York
and
San Jose

2 different data centers

again, which facilities? Good facilities are going to run quite a bit, and should be expected. Facilities that are built to a "minimum" spec for both backup power/cooling and power density will run quite a bit less and be less accomodating.

Are these carrier neutral facilities? etc.

Phil21 12-11-2006 04:03 PM

For NYC/San Jose I would be highly suspect of spending less than $1200/mo on a full cab and 20A power, $200-300/mo for a redundant circuit (read: 16A total usage across both circuits) and $300-500/mo for another primary circuit. Anything less and the facility is barely covering it's costs just for the utility usage - much less realizing return on investment for the power/cooling infrastructure (to allow for future upgrades, good maint, etc.)

This is of course assuming 120V service - 208V and three phase drops would vary accordingly

Miss Nancy 12-11-2006 04:04 PM

http://swiftco.net

carrier neutral

dell 4210 cabs- fully meshed front and back doors

sprint, level 3, limelight, global crossing... more carrier not listed? Meet us in fiber MMR, and set up on Xcon for you.

end of the year... agressive priced to go

Phil21 12-11-2006 04:05 PM

ugh.. also note that in a vendor-locked facility (e.g. not equinix, switch and data, 350 main, 25 broad, etc.) expect considerably less due to the fact that they are simply selling you space/power in order to be able to sell you bandwidth. Here the space/power is somewhat of a "loss leader" to get you in the door.

This is great, except no way can you fill a 42u rack with decent hardware, you need atleast 40amps.

Very Good Point! Depends on the type of hardware you are racking, that's why you can add up to 3 circuits per cabinet... :)

$200.00/month for 20amps in NYC? Where are you seeing/getting prices that low? :)

A lot of people in NYC are charging ~$20.00+ per amp due to increasing power costs. But in other (still big) markets such as Atlanta you can still get power for ~$10.00 per amp.

Also... do you work with Reflected? I thought I read a while back that Reflected was sold to Server Central?

looking at 250/mo for 20amps here in ashburn/equinix 320/mo in switch & data tysons or reston VA. Though dupont fabros is also doing $140/20 amps.

How much are they charging per cab/per sq foot (if you have cages with them) in Equinix Ashburn?

Power pricing has been pretty volatile recently.

40Amps won't usually hold up a full rack either. You only get 80% available utilization per circuit.
You need atleast 60Amps per cabinet to fit in 30-32 servers.
We do that via 2 x 30Amp circuits. You could also do 3 x 20Amp circuits but it requires a 3rd powerstrip.
We usually charge $1200 for a full locking cabinet w/ 2 x 30Amp circuits on UPS and Generator backed power

That is a relatively "high" price for a host based in Texas running *almost* pure cogent (and yes, I know your network doesn't necessarily have anything to do with colo prices on space and power, but sometimes hosts charge more for space/power when they charge less for bandwidth). I would expect to see ~$10.00 per amp of power in Texas (as many providers are charging) and closer to ~$500.00 -$700.00 per rack/cab per month. Of course, that all depends on the level of service included - if you are offering free reboots, basic remote hands, etc. that might actually be a very good price :P (Especially since you guys have been known to offer bandwidth at very low rates, albeit, cogent.)

Also, it completely depends on the type of server you are running. I bet I can stick ~30 Sun middle-range servers in a rack with 40amps of power :upsidedow but Dells and most "high-end" servers such as quad-core Xeons (especially the older cores) sure are power hungry monsters - even 60amps might not be enough in some cases.

A 20 amp circuit + 46U Rack with unique keyset, redundant uplinks etc in Amsterdam, Europe will cost you about 800 usd

We are not a "cogent only" host ... We have differant options available in bandwidth mixes you can choose from.

We have a value mix which is:

Global Crossing, Cogent, and TimeWarner

and a premium mix which is:

Global Crossing, TimeWarner, and Level(3)

Also, the rack pricing is relative to the datacenter quality and equipment quality in the datacenter as well as the provided SLA's on power and uptime with regards to the actual datacenter.

When you have to account for UPS's for the entire datacenter, transfer switches, generators with filled diesel tanks, as well as cost of purchasing additional diesel everytime we run a genset power load test, etc.

Pricing also takes into account the level of personal service which is delivered, etc -- all colo accounts include:

100% Power Uptime SLA
Conditioned and UPS Backed Power
Generator Backed Power w/ 48 hour refueling contracts
24/7 Onsite Support

Remote hands / Management

Ping and HTTP Monitoring Free for all servers
Hardware Swaps Included free
24/7 Reboots Included free
BIOS Changes Included free
O/S (re)Installation $50 flat fee - Volume discounts available
Hardware troubleshooting $25 per half-hour
Software troubleshooting $25 per half-hour
Server Management Ranges from $25 to $59 a month

This is what people would expect to see in dedicated servers, and we offer it in a colocation solution ... it is obviously well worth it as our colo side of the business is doing quite well.

We do a lot of local business, and compared with our competitors (VeriCenter, CyrusOne) who charge extremely high rates but offer less inclusive / personal service -- we are very affordable.

We also negotiate on pricing ... i mentioned our list pricing in my original price

ALSO, the most important part:

I said $1200 for a Full cabinet with 2 x 30Amps (60Amps) ... you said $500 per cabinet + $10/Amp ... that would run about the same as I said ... $1100 hehe

I have nothing against you guys... unless you are still employing Chris from FNAP which the people on WHT seem convinced is true. You are also banned from WHT for who knows what... and OrangeFiber/AlphaRed has been smashed for VERY shady busy practices multiple times.

BUT, I was saying $500.00 including the first 20 amps. There are *many* providers in Texas offering 100% network uptime and cabs at $500.00 per month or less. Why? Space and power is *so cheap* for you...

I would be wary of this "Philip" since he showed up right as "Michael" aka Chris (foundrynap) disappeared.

However, that pricing is a bit high given the lopsidedness of their network. If cogent drops they are hosed as the other providers simply can't take the capacity of cogent.

For example in the atlanta market you could easily get the following

Locking 42U Cabinet: $500/mo
40A 110v (2x20) : $400/mo
10mbps BGP Cogent+Telia: $150/mo
==========================
$1050
