HELP KEEP PRISCILLA OWEN OFF THE
5TH DISTRICT COURT OF APPEALS

In another attempt to pack federal courts with followers of the Radical Right, President G. W. Bush has nominated Priscilla Owen to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. Owen is an enemy of the First Amendment and during her seven years on the Texas Supreme Court, advocated positions far to the right of her conservative colleagues appointed by then-Governor Bush. If confirmed, Owen's extreme views would threaten the rights and liberties of citizens in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Justice Owen's record reveals her to be the type of judge President Bush claims to dislike. She is a judge who attempts to make law from the bench. According to People for the American Way, ?Bush's own White House counsel, Alberto Gonzalez, who served on the Texas Supreme Court with Owen, described one dissenting opinion Owen joined as ?an unconscionable act of judicial activism?.?

Owen has a key ally in the White House: Karl Rove who is now the top Bush political advisor. Rove was Owen?s campaign manager and is determined to confirm Owen and other right-wing ideologues to our federal courts. He believes that this is the only way to hold on to the president's extreme right-wing voter base.

You helped us keep Charles Pickering off the 5th Circuit in March. Priscilla Owen is just another right-wing nominee to this important court. Because this hearing is pending this coming Tuesday, July 23rd, we need you to CALL your Senators ASAP and urge them to REJECT Owen's confirmation. To phone, go to:

If you don't care about the First Amendment, feel free to just ignore this thread, ignore politics, ignore extremist judges, and just keep on posting about all of important things you usually post about.

The extremist judges are the ones who try to write law from the bench. Like saying the constitution has anything at all to do with abortion. And you can't VOLUNTARILY say the pledge in school
because it has the words "under god" and some people might not want to hear it. You don't want judges who correctly interpret the constitution. You want judges from the left who do anything they think is the "right thing to do" the constitution and they're obligation to uphold it be damned.

Right wing judges are far more often "activist" than left wing judges. Look no further than the right wing members of the Supreme Court for your proof.

I definately agree with that. I mean i truly don't believe that porn is speech. There is no statement made by it and it generally isn't artistic. It's just to get dudes off.
Of course porn can be used to make a point or statement but usually it isn't. But yeah calling porn constitutionally protected speech is one good thing about liberal activist judges.

here's one of the "issues" listed on their site.... (I was also following this story before I hauled ass outta Cali)

now, while I agree that what that school did was fucked up.... someone please help me understand how this is a free speech case. :eek7 cuz I don't get it.... they kicked her kid out because they didn't like the fact that she was a stripper. How does that violate the first amendment?

(btw, there's more "issues" in there that also don't make any sense in a "free speech" kinda way, but I just picked one so as not to be quoting a whole damn page)

I would assume that they got involved because her kid was punished for the fact that she choose to work in the adult industry, which is totally legal.

If your kid was punished at school because you choose to do design for adult sites, or because you were a Mormon, or because you protested againt Clinton, or you were a Nazi, or whatever else, you would probably see this as a civil rights issue as well.

I am just guessing at why they got involved.

well, I would suppose that'd depend on what it says in their agreement that she signed in order to get her kid enrolled.....

btw, the last update I heard on this story was that they agreed to allow the kid back since she quit the stripping gig and instead she's taken an offer to pose nude in a magazine.

I don't know the specifics of that case. I was just basing my post on what you posted.

I think that beyond the free speech issues, they also extend legal help to adult industry people who need help.

One of their events that I attended in Los Angeles last year (I think it was last year) featured a number of big ass free speech lawyers. A number of the lawyers they work with have argued cases in front of the Supreme Court.

Larry Flynt is also a big supporter of the Free Speech Coalition.

I saw this story a while back on The O'reilly Factor. I believe there was a morality clause in the contract, and she admitted she knew she broke the contract cuz she said she only took a job at a strip club hours away so the school wouldn't find out. I could be mistaken in my memory but i believe a parent of another student went to that club, saw her, and reported her to the school.

I'm all for free speech, Larry Flynt, freedom to drink beer, eat pussy, barbequed spare ribs, and the NRA..... but that still doesn't mean I necessarily care about their spam or newsletter or update or whatever it is that got sent to your inbox..... so don't hold it against me if I'm an ass.... :glugglug

I think the freedom of speech thing includes freedom of expression which broadens the scope considerably..
