How do you protect your domains?

So you have a million dollar domain or your site is huge and has been around for years.

how do you protect yourself from domain theif or people trying to steal your domain?

are there any services where the registrar can contact the whois from their own registrar and just give them a call or what not

any thoughts?

There are a few things you can do.

First, use a secure registrar such as Moniker, which locks all domains and has a very low (or zero) incidence of theft.

Second, make sure your contact info is up to date.

Third, trademark it.

If you want to monetize it, try Parked.com.

so someone hijacks your mail, requests the "forgotten password", and unlocks it.

The suggestions you've gotten are good ones: lock it, keep contact info. up to date, and make really crazy passwords for your domain account and your associated email accounts.
