It looks like they are merely establishing their ownership at this point. This may be for a benign reason, such as preventing others from fucking with the code, or it could be a prelude what happened when Compuserve established its ownership of the GIF format (and then what happened the GIF format could happen to JPEG, so they might want to watch out).

Sounds like a lot of patent bullshit going around today... Streaming Video, JPEGs... what's next, message boards? Chat? "System for selling subscription services to a database system" (paysite)? lol...
