Prison tattoo program scrapped

OTTAWA, Dec 4 (Reuters Life!) - Canada is scrapping a pilot program that provided tattoos for prisoners in an effort to stop the spread of diseases such as hepatitis and AIDS, Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said Monday.

The program, set up by the previous Liberal government, offered free tattoos to prisoners in six of Canada's 58 federal prisons. The Liberals lost in January to the right-wing Conservatives, who promised to crack down on crime.

"Our government will not spend taxpayers' money on providing tattoos for convicted criminals," Day said in a statement.

"Our priority is to have an effective federal corrections system that protects Canadians, while providing inmates with access to acceptable health care and treatment programs."

Day said this included programs to immunize inmates against hepatitis A and B, voluntary screening for early detection and treatment of infection, and courses to inform prisoners about the dangers of illegal tattoos.

Can easily be made to work if stupid fucking idiotic assclowns were not involved with this sort of shit. (same feelings towards the US system) This is a medical issue and not a fucking political one. Here in the US there is also no condom programs either, fucking ridiculous.

Worried about costs, let them buy them like other items in the commissary. Just allow that shit damn it.

To many people go to prison disease free and leave with HIV or other transferable diseases, then of course infect others. Many of course will be back in prison or will never leave, they also get infected. Well then guess what, the Government has to provide medical treatment and whoops there goes your savings and up goes your long term costs.

exactly...the course would save the national money in the long term if it stopped more homemade style tattoos passing on HIV, etc..like a needle exchange in the outside world

who cares about inmates...the more of them that get HIV the better...thank jebus the liberals aren't running this country anymore...

Then let them know on their way in that if they contract a dangerous disease by willfully breaking prison rules against tattoos they will not be released.

Canada has an NHS right? So, if she gets it - or worse a kid is born with it - it hits everybody's tax pocket, right?
