My Page File hates me... why does it hate me?
This is a bit of a read, I put a summary down at the end for people who hate reading a lot of shit.
I?ve been having a lot of trouble out of this shitty Asus motherboard (P5N32-SLI Premium, the only intel nforce 590 board made I think). First it was the usb 2.0 problem with tons of delayed write errors on external hard drives (fixed that by disabling legacy support for USB). Then it was the ?onboard? sound card not working right (sound files would play, but the volume would go up and down constantly). I fixed that problem by uninstalling the drivers of the sound card supplied by the CD and found some on the net. I have not gamed in a while so I decided to pop a few games on and ass how fast this machine is (E6600/2GB Ram/Geforce 7900GTX). I first started with F.E.A.R. multiplayer. Game runs fine, no computer lag (internet latency is another story LOL, fucking DSL). I play it for about ten minutes then quit? bam, when game closes out instantly crashes PC. Manually restart computer and It says that the nv4_disp.dll driver had crashed, blah blah blah? I try uninstalling chipset drivers (thinking maybe the CD drivers were buggered like the sound card), got some from the net. Re-installed display drivers as well using newest available from nvidia.com. Loaded game up? again, played smooth as can be. Go to exit and the PC crashes again. GAH. Thinking it may just be F.E.A.R. hates my glasses (and/or computer) I installed Star Wars: Battlefront II. Open the game up, play it for about a hour, no problems at all? until I try to exit. When I exit, bam, instant crash again, same error. Just for the hell of it I brought up Windows Task Manager and left it on the other screen and opened up Battlefront again and watched the screen a bit, CPU usage and PF Usage, etc. When the Page File reached 1GB everything was still going good (that is the Windows Task Manger screen was not froze up, was still very fluid, could see it on-the-fly). Then when the Page File reached 1.04GB the Windows Task Manager screen froze up, it was no longer updating. Tried to exit computer, and as you guessed it, instant crash. I manually restarted and edited the page file from a size of 4GB down to 700MB, restarted the computer. Opened up Task Manager and opened up Battlefront again. Played for thirty minutes, the Task Manager remained fluid the whole time. Closed out the game? NO CRASHY CRASHY! Opened up F.E.A.R., tried it out for about a hour. The Task Manager remained fluid this entire time, never ?freezing? up. Exited the computer? no crash! Problem solved. :) SUMMARY Computer was crashing when exiting from a game. While playing a game no problems whatsoever, but as soon as I exited to desktop computer would freeze and require manual restart. After restarting, Windows said that the nv4_disp.dll file was crashing. Problem was fixed by reducing page file size to under 1GB. How this fixed it I?ll never know. I like cheesepie. |
