FIX: Microsoft XP update KB923980 needing install time after time?
I don't know if anyone else has been seeing this same fix (Microsoft XP update KB923980) having to be installed time, after time, after time. But I did find this on the Microsoft forums that FINALLY fixed the problem for me. So I thought I'd share.
This has been happening on my home system since about 11/25.
From your description, I understand that the update KB923980 is kept being
offered to install.
I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that
I will try my best to help you. However, if I have misunderstood your
concern, please feel free to let me know.
This issue may occur if some files' version is not correct. They should all
be at version 5.1.2600.3015. At this time, let us refer to the following
steps to troubleshoot the issue.
Step 1: Remove KB923980
============================
To uninstall this update:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2. From the list of programs, select KB923980, and then click the Add/
Remove button to uninstall the update.
Step 2: Show hidden files, folders, and system files :
============================
1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and
folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.
Step 3: Rename the corrupt file
============================
1. Navigate to WINDOWS\system32
2. Locate the file named Nwapi32.dll and rename it to Nwapi32.old
3. Please repeat the above steps with another files:
Nwprovau.dll
Nwwks.dll
Nwrdr.sys
The .dll files are located in WINDOWS\system32
The .sys is located in WINDOWS\system32\drivers
Step 4: Reinstall KB923980 again
============================
Security Update for Windows XP (KB923980)

After doing so, please restart the system and revisit Windows Update to see
if it's offered.
