DSL Connection probs...help!

Booted up the computer this morning to find I cannot access anything online.
Browsers won't load anything, email won't connect, antivirus etc can't connect to access updates etc etc etc.
I have a D-Link modem/router and it tells me I'm connected at my usual speed.
Rang tech support, they say all is fine on their end, line is good, connection is good and they can see no problems.
Got our tech guy to come and look...he can see no reason why things won't work either.
Powered off the modem/router, checked all cabling including the phone line...everything plugged in.
We've got 3 p.c's all networked yet none can access anything online.
Done a full virus scan, adaware and windows defender scans...all clear.
Disabled firewalls...nothing connects.
I'm using my kids dialup account to post this.
Anyone got any ideas? Think my modem/router is fucked?

Did you try start,run,cmd,ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew ?

aico 12-04-2006 07:33 PM

Try releasing the IP or whatever it's called... lol (sorry not a tech, but had the same problem).

Calico Jack 12-04-2006 07:42 PM

Spunky, are the actual commands I type once at the command line (sorry, but you couldn't find anyone more useless at this stuff than me):

ipconfig/release
then
ipconfig/renew

thanks in advance!

Spunky 12-04-2006 07:45 PM

Yes that's right after the first command you'll see abunch of zeros then type in the second..most likely that's the problem or try unplugging the power cable in the modem for 20 seconds if that didn't work

Can you log into the router? I think you can release the IP within the router interface.

A release/renew will do nothing on your PC except release and renew the IP address your router is assigning to you. There's no point in that. Since your problem is on all three PCs, it's pretty safe to assume the issue is with your router.

You've got a couple of options here. Your best bet is to completely bypass your router and connect one computer straight to the modem. Since you're on ADSL, you're likely using PPPoE as the connection type. Once the router is bypassed, you'll have to setup your PC to connect via PPPoE. Your ISP will walk you through that (takes less than 5 minutes). At that point, one of two things will happen. One, you'll get a connection. Then you know the problem is with the router. Two, you'll still not be connected. If that happens, call your ISP back as the issue is likely with them (the chances of both your router and your PC crapping out at the same time is unlikely).

If the router is to blame, you can try a factory reset (check your manual). If that fails, call your router vendor or buy a new router. Also, fire your tech guy as bypassing the router is THE FIRST THING he should've done.

KrisKross 12-04-2006 07:59 PM

Oh, crap. Just realized you're using a combo router/modem. Those things fucking suck balls.

Tell me what model you're using (it should say it on the device) and I'll see if I can tell you what to do from there.

Calico Jack 12-04-2006 08:01 PM

Yes, I can log into the router. According to it, I'm connected to my Isp. The Isp tech support can see me too and tells me I have an 'active connection'.
The thing is, I can't get any program to connect.

Calico Jack 12-04-2006 08:06 PM

The modem/router is a D-Link Dsl-G604t
All 3 p.c's are connected by cable, not wireless.
Thanks for all the help guys...I really appreciate it.

KrisKross 12-04-2006 08:06 PM

What they likely mean by that is that their logs show you passing PPPoE authentication and obtaining an IP address from them. If they can see that, then there's something wrong with your router. What model is it?

Try these steps from a PC connected to your DSL:

Open a command prompt and type the following:
ping google.com

See if you get responses. If not, try:
ping 72.14.207.99

If you get responses there, let me know.

Also, if you know how to determine your IP address and are willing to communicate it to me privately, I can see if I can successfully ping you.

KrisKross 12-04-2006 08:12 PM

Also, log in to the router, click on the "Tools" tab, choose "Test" on the left and in the ping box, put in 72.14.207.99 and see if you get results.

Then, go under the "Status" tab, choose "ADSL" on the right and tell me what your SNR is (Downstream/Upstream) and well as your attenuation.

I've got the phone line connected to the dialup account at the moment, so as soon as I'm done, I'll connect the modem/router back to the phone line and give that a try.
Thanks for all your help. I'll post the results when I have them.

Yah, trust me I had this very same problem, everything looked great, I just couldn't get online. Spent 3 hours with tech support with both the DSL company and the Router company, they couldn't fix it, they were pinging me and everything successfully. Called back again, not sure which, got another guy, he said to log into the router and release the IP.

Bingo, I was online.

Powercycling it should effectively do the same thing. It should be the first step of any troubleshooting. If a release/renew fixes the issue and a powercycle didn't, there's usually a problem with the router.

sounds silly, but have you checked to make sure the dns servers you are using just aren't temporarily down? has happened to me a few times and i think it's my whole connection down but it ends up just being the nameservers and i can't resolve anything so nothing connects until I switch them or they come back up.

Is this the same as thing as doing it through the command prompt?
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew

Nope. Your ISP assigns an IP to your router. In turn, your router assigns internal IPs to your PCs. Releasing and renewing that won't accomplish anything.

There should be a way to release/renew straight on your router's interface. I'm trying to find it now.

KrisKross 12-04-2006 08:32 PM

Ok, while logged in to your router, under "Advanced", choose "PPP" on the left. Click "Disconnect" and then "Connect". That's the closest you'll come to a release/renew on this device.

This is all assuming your ISP uses PPPoE.

Calico Jack 12-04-2006 08:34 PM

Thanks...I'll give that a try too.

did it work?

Calico Jack 12-04-2006 09:05 PM

Haven't tried it yet...I'm using the phone line to connect with dialup, just got to finish a few emails and I'll try it.

try flushing your dns too...
