who can tell me about Washington DC

I'm thinking about taking a trip there this weekend with the wife, and besides the actual monuments there I know nothing about the city. What are some good hotels and restaurants that you know of?

thank you :wetkiss

I went to Crystal Palace mall(the area close to the Pentagon) and watch all the agents on their lunchbreak, it was pretty cool actually. Other than that, Jeffersons monument and the Space museum is good. I lived in Annandale for almost a year, and still visit Washington DC every Christmas

Stay at the Marriott on the water front in Baltimore it's better then DC and only minutes away.

I also recommend you take the day tour at Arlington then hit the monuments at night !

any reason not to stay right in the city in particular? i really don't want to drive around after we get there, I'd rather do alot of walking.

Its expensive and the city is violent. I cant recommend any good places to eat out in DC. Its 12 yeas since i lived there and when I go on my annual visit I eat at the family's house, not in in DC.

I personally think Baltimore is much better and they have tours of DC right from the Hotel so you don't need to drive once you're there.

I guess you're friving down from NY so this is how I'd do it:

Friday - Drive to Marriott in Baltimore
- Spend evening walking the water front

Sat - Take all day DC tour
- Arlington, Mt Vernon, Fed Reserve, Monuments etc..

Sun - Visit Fort McHenry
- Take water front tour

I went earlier this year. Stayed at the Sofitel Lafayette Square which was convenient to all the monuments, White House, etc. I went to the Smithsonians (all of them) and the White House. Missed the Holocaust which I really wanted to see. There were walkable restaurants all around the hotel and the staff was very good at giving recommendations.

The only non-walking place I went to was the Air and Space museum - fast Metro ride to there.

BTW, I walked by myself the entire time, including night, and felt quite safe.

It used to be the murder capital on the US a few years back.. I dunno if it still is.

I have been there many times, I really liked it especially the memorials and the sites! Its just like most cities you have the good parts of town and the bad parts, however I would say its worth a visit, Some really beautiful sites to see :thumbsup

You can stay at the embassy suites downtown..It's a reasonable price (for DC)...Then if you want to go out to eat, you can go to Blackie's House of Beef off of M street near Georgetown for steak and Legal Seafood on K street downtown for of course, seafood. I recommend the crab meat stuffed lobster tail and wash it down with some Perrier Jouet Champagne...
