U.N. Ambassador John Bolton To Step Down
(CBS/AP) Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his recess appointment expires soon, the White House said Monday. The White House had argued in recent weeks that Bolton had demonstrated his value and professionalism in the job and deserved to be confirmed. But even a Senate still in Republican hands didn't have the numbers to make it happen, CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller reports. Bolton's nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans. Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a moderate Republican who lost in the midterm elections Nov. 7 that swept Democrats to power in both houses of Congress, was adamantly opposed to Bolton. President Bush gave Bolton the job temporarily in August 2005, while Congress was in recess. But the appointment expires when Congress formally adjourns, no later than early January. Although Mr. Bush could not give Bolton another recess appointment, the White House was believed to be exploring other ways of keeping him in the job, perhaps by giving him a title other than ambassador. But Bolton informed the White House he intended to leave when his current appointment expires, White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said. Mr. Bush planned to meet with Bolton and his wife later Monday in the Oval Office. As late as last month, Mr. Bush, through his top aides, said he would not relent in his defense of Bolton, despite unwavering opposition from Democrats who view Bolton as too combative for international diplomacy. The White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. The incoming chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, said he saw "no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again." http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n2224103.shtml |
Funny I remember how everyone was bashing the guy not long ago..
|
Figured that was coming.
It was a recess appointment and now that the Dems have control of the Senate he doesn't stand a chance. It's a good thing too since the whole point of a diplomatic body is for people with diplomatic skills to negotiate with one another. For some reason Dubya though he should send in a cowboy like himself to tell the rest of the world how it's going to be. |
i would prefer if he stayed...
|
The start of the backlash..... And not against Bush or the Republicans. :2 cents: It has begun. :winkwink:
|
I thought a priority was to get him through the lame duck? I guess he threw in the towel on that one. Bolton wouldn't have been paid if he was re-appointed in the same manner, so I guess he didn't care enough about the job to work for free.

This is the second step in the dismantling of the war machine that backed the US into a horrible, ugly position. Rummy is out the door, now Bolton is going... perhaps the US will finally have some people in charge who's first idea isn't to send in the military.

I'm not sure it's a bad step - letting him go...

Bolton got the job done. It's too bad he's being forced out.

Michael Bolton is still lame. |
Good riddance to human garbage - the ass was a blot on the landscape and an embarassment internationally - along with the Admin.

You can't blame the war on Rummy or Cheney or anyone else but Dubya. |
Lenny, if you are a cowboy, that is an issue... if you hire other cowboys to surround you, you shouldn't be surprised about the result.
Bolton hates the UN. He thinks it is a waste. His presence there representing the US was a total insult to everyone involved, and represented more cowboy diplomancy (run in with the guns firing, and talk to whoever is left alive). Stickyfingerz, you have google... you can go back and see where is he is from and see how he is involved... and importantly, how well he has done at the UN in getting other countries to join against Iraq (answer: none... many countries are leaving Iraq and not supporting the US positions as presented at the UN). |
