What is with the current trend of forcing the browser windows to fullsize?!

Okay, I have been noticing lately that alot of sites are now forcing the browsers to full screen, ,and what the fuck? Why do you guys do it? The way I figure it is this...

800x640 users almost always use a full screen browser due to the resolution... so dosen't do any good with them.

1024x768 and larger users will definitely have their browsers affected by this but.... maybe, just maybe, they like the size that they make their browser... I for one use a size that is closest to an 800x640 shape so that I can judge how my designs will look in the smaller resolution (not exact, but pretty damn helpful).

Okay that's just one point of view, mine the webmaster who has to troll through this bullshit everyday... but here's the other one..

Most people with machines that have the capability to use different browser resolutions have the money needed to buy the current hardware, and thus have the money needed to buy a membership... so why piss off the group that could be most valuable?! The people that use 800x640 usually do it because they have no choice, i.e. not enough cash to upgrade to current standards, and therefore not enough cash for a membership... see where I'm going with this???

Ok, so let's assume for arguments sake that their are numbers to back that this method will increase sales... then why do it on your webmaster pages? For christ's sake at least save the bullshit for the surfers... assuming of course that my logic is flawed by facts that dispute it.

Anyways, I'd like to hear some other opinions on this... do you do it? if so, why? Am I totally off base here, and this method can triple conversion rates? what's the dealio, people?!

I for one am quite annoyed every time I have to readjust the size of my browser at least 5 times a day. Isn't it possible that the surfer may get annoyed as well? For some sort of comparison for arguments sake, we can use pop-op hell's as an example of a practice that has finally come to a point of control vs. abuse... notice they are alot less common than 1 or 2 years ago... maybe there's a reason for this?! hmmm... maybe.

What do you guys think?

Its pretty ghey cause you cant get to the X button, and if they dont have a "click here to close" button you are screwed

As a site desingner I would NEVER force this on an end user. Designers and developers that do dont understand the end user.

very true but on the other hand it can used as a tool EX: the user doesn't know the ALT F4 trick so they buy whatever is on the page or shut down their pc of hit CTRL ALT DEL and end the Explorer window:2 cents:

old news bro... was doing it years ago.

Jayson 07-17-2002 08:49 PM

I fucking hate it. I use two monitors and the one I have the browsers on is not the number one monitor, so when some prick forces my screen full size it goes to the other screen.

actually, I need to clarify... the resizing that I am referring to does not hide the function buttons, it just resizes... so how can it be a tool like you infer badboybill? The resizing that I'm talking about leaves the browser funstions intact, and only makes it fit to screen, I suppose is a better descriptive term.

Amp, I know it's old news, but why even do it?

re:
"but why even do it?"

It makes more money, simple as that. No need to analyze that one further...

what do you think they will do first? buy? or shutdown?..once they shutdown their PC you lose the surfer completly

i fucking hate that shit. never on my sites - incredibly annoying.

Danielle 07-17-2002 10:10 PM

I hate sites that change my browser size, and any site that does it will never get me to buy their product, membership or service.

If I want to change the size of my browser, I'll frikin do it my self.

And for anyone that says that screwing with some bodys browser makes more money...... Show me verifiable stats that it does.

Hugs,
Danielle

Not going to show you my stats, but it WILL make more money when applied to an exit console, for instance. At least it does for me.

exit console is a whole nother story... I'm talking about the main sites... and yeah if it does make more money on a real site then if not stats, show some logic or other kind of proof.

quiet... my sentiments exactly.

just curious... is this reply based solely on my topic title, or did you read what was posted?

Gutterboy 07-18-2002 01:34 AM

I've been doing it for about a year, and when the console in question is popping straight to a tour it definitely makes more money with auto-resize. If its not a tour, I use smaller consoles so its not an issue.
