People get into things for a variety of reasons, right? So I was wondering what sorts of things get people into the "adult business"... What got you involved? What was the draw? I bet there are a wide variety of answers here. What is your story?

I'm in it for most of the above, too... I just thougt that a single answer would choose people to pick the thing that matters most. Otherwise, I think the results would be less interesting.

I dunno. To me, it is pretty interesting that the vast majority of people, when they have to choose the one thing, have chosen the money. I mean, there are a lot of jobs that pay well, and sex is pretty personal. I suspected that most people just decided in porn because it pays well, but I also hoped it wasn't true...

and... it is

i was forced into it.... had no choice.... was abducted and chained to the floor and told to produce or suffer repeated ass rapings.

I guess I find it pretty sad that so many people are in it for the money. I know the poll, by itself, is pretty uncontrovercial... but the main reason I posted it was to see if money was the main thing for people. Personally, I don't think that is how it should be, especially in the sex industry.

First, I should say that *of course* money has to be a big part of why you choose a job. After all, we work so we have enough money to live our lives, right? So I wouldn't expect everyone to be doing jobs that are 100% about spiritual fulfillment or anything.

The thing that gets me is that the money comes first. We deal in sexuality... We turn people on, we show people having sex, we show and do all kinds of things in this industry. All of it is very personal.

If it is all just done for cash, isn't that kindof like... Prostitution?

It isn't like I hadn't thought if the seedy side of this business before. It is just that, I always felt that since people are also in it for more legitimate, less creepy reasons, it wasn't a problem. If money is the main thing for most people, then maybe we are a nasty vice industry...

Like I said, though... All sorts of jobs pay. Shouldn't the reason to pick one over the rest be about something other than the cash? Sexuality, purely for the sake of money.. gives me the heebiejeebies.

But for whatever other reasons you are in it other than the money, without the money there would be no industry to be in.

The photogs..... not because they enjoy burning up film. Construction workers.... not because they enjoy carving roads in the searing sun.

I can see that that is the case. But "it woudn't happen without the money" is a long way from "the money is the main reason to do it"... Right? Some people wouldn't be artists if it didn't pay the bills... because the bills need to get paid. But the reason isn't just the money, it's the art. Same with teachers.

yes they do. and people work them for the money. yet you're saying that because people are in it for the money in this industry, that somehow that implies it might be a 'nasty vice industry'. that doesn't make any sense, since the same thing applies to ALL industries.

and that's true. No matter what you do...... you could be a fucking janitor..... but be the best janitor there is, and you will make money.

But that is not really the quetion you asked.

But the main reason has to be the money. It is the main reason for any job. I wouldnt work anywhere near as hard if I had the choice.

Outside of the money, I do it because I can set my own hours, because it interests me, because it is not mainstream corporate world (which I did for years), because it is not accepted by all of society. Thats why I like this JOB more than others I have had. And it is a job, because I am doing it for the money.

I don't think so. Not in our industry, and not in other ones either. Sure, some people are... but I don't think that is how it works for everyone, and I definitely don't think that is how it ought to be.

A teacher gets paid. If they didn't, they couldn't be a teacher. Still, for the most part, the reason they choose that job is because they love to teach. We pick one job over another, because we want to do what we like, and what we are good at. (Usually the same thing.)

Or, take the example of my father... He is a lawyer. He became one, I gather, for a number of reasons. Sure, one of them was that lawyers make good money. But he chose his career because he is good at arguing, and likes the mental challenege of it. If it was all about the money, they we'd all be trying to do whatever pays most. Not all of us do, thank goodness.

In the case of the sex industry, especially, it would be pretty creepy if we all did.

I for one didn't get into this for the money. I founded an amateur site with my girlfriend a couple of years ago because it was fun. It was an adventure, since I had never done anything like it. It was creative, because we were trying to take good, even artistic photos. It so happens that it ended up paying okay... but it came as a surprise when that happened. And I could still make a lot more, working a lot fewer hours, at McDonals.

The thing is, I really love what I do. So, in the end, that is why I do it. It is a great creative outlet, and even more fun because the art I try to make has naked people in it. Maybe it is because I don't work in hardcore, but I think most of the models I work with feel the same. I know a few of them definitely do.

The very first thing I do when I get up in the morning is check my stats and then my paypal. I've never done that with any other job.

This business is addictive to me because when you work hard the results are immediate and I fucking love that.

I didn't mean to make any contradiction (um, obviously)... but I am replying pretty quickly as I am really interested in this, so I may have goofed. I make mistakes.

I think I did explain why I am in the busines... because I enjoy it a lot. Mostly, it is the creative aspect... making something beautiful, coming up with set ideas, all those things.

Basically it's for the money, which has paid for some of our houses, cars, kids colleges, and decent retirements, etc... This is a business just like Any business, sure it's a fun business to be in, but it's still a business. :winkwink:

I have other talents, but no one will pay me anywhere near as much as I can make in Porn.

I don't really like 9 to 5 jobs. I usually put in more than 40 hours a week, but I don't have a set schedule. I could never go back to that.

I actually didn't WANT to get into porn. I knew about it and when another NON ADULT site stopped counting my clicks - I went to a pay per click adult sponsor as I needed the money. I had been dabbling with non adult for a while.

I always thought adult would be so much harder - as I thought there was more competition - and it would be tougher.

Then it took me almost a month (I Think) to make my first sign up on PPS. I remember writing TopCash at the time to ask if their % plan required any minimum sales as I wasn't sure I could send one sale a week - which was required at the time.

Then I started getting more checks and now I am stuck. I like what I do from the freedom and money point of views. Some of it is challenging, but frankly - if I could make as much promoting seashells - it wouldn't make much of a difference...

goth, I think I understand where you're coming from and agree to a point... Any business that attracts the 'get rich quick' people will of course have a majority of people wanting mainly money.

I like the marketing.. It's a challenge, who can come out on top.

The fact that any joe can design a site and compete with the AT&T's of the biz on nearly the same level is amazing to me.

Only a fraction voted for creativity, which to me is an important one. Where else can you design something that millions of people can see, without having to answer to anybody?

Of course the money is important too. But for me, that's just icing on the cake. I just pick the sites I'd want to start anyway, that also make the most money. Adult just happens to be one of them.

Would I stay in this biz if I made half the money I do today? Yes.

I don´t think that Thehun or PK do this for the money only; they could sell their sites and retire comfortably. Yet, could they say "I don´t do this for the money?"

I'm just an amateur photographer right now, but I've been putting together some videos in my spare time and if things go the way I think they will, I'll have some decent part-time income from this.

I already have an $80,000 per year job so that takes a lot of my time, but I'm going to turn my hobby into a source of some additional income so I can reach my goal of completely retiring on my 40th birthday (I'm 27 right now).

my parents gave me two choices before they kicked me out:
"either become a lawyer or sell hardcore pornography"

sad justy how many of you are in this just for the money. I started my site cause there was nothing else like it out there and I wanted to see one like that. I personally think MOST big sites started that way too, the money came secondary.
