If someone is making fake profiles on myspace...

and sending that traffic to a landing page then to a sponsor.

Is that spamming or not?

I would TOS that account in seconds if I was a program owner. Let's hear what GFY has to say.

is that person mass soliciting friends? then i would say that is spamming.
if not then fair game

SmokeyTheBear 12-01-2006 11:50 PM

i would send the traffic straight to a sponsor... playboy does , they use myspace and sell porn memberships directly from their myspace page.. why let huge companies do it and not the regular joe blow..

Playboy is creating real profiles and with the consistent of MySpace. This particular individual is creating hundreds of fake profiles and sending traffic.

With MySpace it basically boils down to if the profile is real or not.
Real = not spam (unless they're mass soliciting or abusing some other mechanism)
Not Real = spam.
If they're abusing/breaking MySpace's terms of service then you are actually liable for their tactics (if you are their primary sponsor and willingly allow the individual to abuse rules/laws), so always remember that one. :2 cents:

and to answer the thread, everyone is doing it and myspace is getting ruined to an extent..... new ship is sailing though and catching up fast!

No I do not know what that ship is, I was hopping you would!

Kimo 12-02-2006 12:30 AM

TOS for sure. Fucking myspace spammers.

Pipeline Q 12-02-2006 12:40 AM

I would have to put the kibosh on that. even if they are not soliciting friends, the profile is there, being searched and linked to from other profiles. spam no matter how you spin it.

sponsors are at huge risk by not terming these affiliates. if myspace sues, it'll no doubt be the sponsors involved also.

How so, it definitely puts a large chunk of cash in Lars pockets or else
he would stop using them.

woj 12-02-2006 02:32 AM

It all depends on how much money you make them, if you are sending them a lot of signups, you can do whatever you want...

jasminexxx 12-02-2006 02:33 AM

yeah... this is the sad truth

The Ghost 12-02-2006 02:43 AM

Hard to say without specific examples. Got a link to the ones you are referring to?
