Question for the web hosting gurus
I'm being hit again by email header forgeries indicating I'm sending spam from one of my domains. Again i have to convince peeps I'm not spamming. (really)
I also still got some goof trying to update the dns zone on another box 2x an hour with some kinda bot, and his high speed cable connection provider (Rogers Cable, Canada) wants all kina detailed logs etc, just to yell at this dude, but thats the least of my worries lately. I only use the email server on the box to inform me of signups to a forum, blog, etc, nothing else. Will disabling the email server on a dedicated box cause any issues with the domain rules, regulations, etc regarding an abuse@domain contact???? I'm inclinded to just disable the email server entirely so I can then say no way is that ip doing anything its not supposed to be doing..... getting tired of this junk thanks |
Yes its perfectly legit to disable email services entirely for a domain.
If the smtp server is down, then you dont need an abuse email :) Cuz you have NO EMAIL at all :) |
You can disable the mailserver with no problem at all.
However, if it was me, I would likely want an e-mail address associated with the domain so I might change the MX to a different server or maybe setup the MTA to allow incoming and forward on all. Then, Karma should take care of the rest because you've done your best. |
i would do the spam check tool at dnsstuff.com then see what email is sending the bad information that the filters are using.
Most likely your hole class c is listed. |

I was looking at some of the email spam I "sent" to myself by a "non-existent email address @ mydomain.com" and they are forged and fake alright, no doubt about it. I do not really need the email server so off it goes for now, thats easier overall and a pretty good argument its not my domain sending that spam. thanks for the opinions |
i would ask the host directly to see if they can set their firewalls to defend the attacks.
