HardDrive backup
 

HeY,

I'm looking to backup my whole HD, its a 36GB scsi HD, never done this before and would appriciate any advice from you guys on how to go about it.

What is the best and cheapest way to do it (I'm looking for an easy and quick but safe way since I will want to back it up every few weeks or so). I want the backup stored in someplace safe, not inside the same machine.

Anybody has any experience with this ? ANY help would be great.

use PowerQuest's DriveImage and back it up to a removeable HD.... when the image is done, pull the drive and stick it on the shelf.

I heard that HD's do not have a very long shelf life, in how long should I expect the seconed HD to get fucked?

well, if you're gonna do periodic backups like you said.... every few weeks or whatever.... make your new backup over the top of the old backup.... if the HD decides to crap on ya one day, buy a new one and repeat. Don't need to turn something this simple into a nightmare.... just do it man.... get it over with....

or..... you could backup everything to CD I suppose..... I just prefer to use HD's cuz it's much faster and don't have to keep changing the fuggin' discs..... :)

I've had working ones that after a shelf visit didn't want to work any more.. .

I've had CD's that were bad straight outta the box..... it means nothing except that sometimes shit is just bad..... there is no guarantee that on any given day, you could buy any given random HD or CD and it will be either good or bad.... there's no way to know, and about the best you can do is try different brands over time and stick with the stuff that works best for you. But saying that the act of physically putting a piece of media on a shelf makes it go bad is ridiculous.... the stuff is on a shelf in the store when you buy it.

True, But in general, obviously some things have longer shelf life than others, for example, DVDR's will last longer than CDR's and CDR's will last longer than HD's, TapeDrives, etc....

yeah all i can think of is that the conditions on my shelf are too humid or dusty etc, and at the store it is often sealed

ok, but you don't need it to last for eternity..... I do backups normally once a week or every two weeks.... if my backup drives take a dump, I replace them..... everything wears out over time.... no computer part is invincible..... I've changed mainboards recently as well.... sometimes shit just goes bad.... nics, cables, keyboards, mice, even monitors.... as long as it lasts a reasonable amount of time for the specific part (as in, not going bad in a week) then, that's part of the costs you just gotta absorb.... same as your car.... things get old and die after a while... you gotta keep up on the maintenance or pretty soon you're drivin' a hunk o' shit. :)

ok Amp, I guess I should have mentioned that I'm using windows 2000 Server , I just got DriveImage 2002 and it wont install it it on Win2k Server. Just win2k Professional.

Any Ideas?

hmmm.... i use 2K Pro so I never ran into that..... did it also come with the "DataKeeper" program? I use that for keeping real-time backups to another HD..... maybe that proggy will install?

DriveImage Pro? I dont see it on the powerquest website and didnt see it in the store either.... I though DriveImage 2002 was the only one no?

I dont see any individual programs that can be installed, the cd just autoruns and there is only one install button. Also there is only one setup.exe file on the cd.

I got DriveIMage 5.0..... didn't know there was a newer version (2002)..... maybe that's a household version or something? (like Winblowz ME?)

ok just found this in the documentation:

"IMPORTANT: DriveImage is not supported for use with servers"

I goes back to where I found it....

YA, I wanted to buy 5.0 but they said they dont have those any more, the new one is 2002

i don't even know what else to suggest bro..... haven't had to look for backup software for quite a while..... maybe some of the server guys around here have a better solution for ya

Actually, u can switch between Win 2k / NT Server and Pro / Workstation to and fro pretty easily. If you have a Server OS, and you got a prog that wont install on Server, just Pro, you can convert your Server to Pro, without loss of any data, do your shit, and then convert back to Server :thefinger

I donno, it migh work but I'm not gonna play around with the OS, especially Windows.

Buy A LOT of blank CDs, and a burner, and a lot of pr0n magazines!!!
