anyone know the perfect amount of meta tags to use on a site for SE

None. Meta tags are ignored. Meta description is used by google to display a description of your site when it comes up in search results but otherwise isn't used for indexing or ranking.

Content is king!

true. but - if your meta tags are symantically similar to the content, and tags then it does (so i've heard) still have some benefit. but by and large, meta tags don't carry much value.

However - i dont suggest abandoning them, as if they are properly written, they cannot hurt you. and if for some chance, things change or they are valued in - then your already ahead of the game.

tags I like to use:

<meta name="description" content="??????">
<meta name="keywords" content="??????">
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow">
<meta name="Revisit-after" content="7 days">
<meta name="clientbase" content="global">
<meta name="distribution" content="w.w.w">
<meta name="page-topic" content="??????">
<meta name="rating" content="adult">
<meta name="expires" content="never">

BUT... as previously stated in this thread.. CONTENT IS KING! But Make sure you stick to a max 5 keyword phrase per optimized page, and that all your content is SYMANTICALLY similar. Symantics is a HUGE part of the algorythym. And make sure the backlinks to this page TAGS are symantically similar to your keywords.

what exactly do you mean by 5 keyword phrases per optimized page? is that in the meta tags or in the page itself? thx

No. I've read Google's actual patent application for their algorithm. Meta tags mean NOTHING when it comes to ranking a site.

Don't leave meta tags out, older search engines still use those and every bit search traffic can bring in a sale.
