ffmihai 11-25-2006 12:18 PM

800x600 is still the king

Jace 11-25-2006 12:23 PM

Ace_luffy 11-25-2006 12:41 PM

Jakke PNG 11-25-2006 12:47 PM

Harry Red 11-25-2006 12:53 PM

I do my new web shop with 900 px wide. Mosr of AWM has good monitors, and I can put in the screen more girls and infos for them.

Outlinezero_yourmofoLOLO 11-25-2006 12:56 PM

below 800px for me.

I use 777 :)

Twisted Dave 11-25-2006 06:35 PM

MOST of my clients want 1024 as the standard... and in all honesty, I don't understand people saying 800 is king....

fact is, on stats I have, 1024 is the most popular overall.... 800 definitely below. PC's even from 3 - 4 years ago, were coming with 1024 as standard. And these days, 1280 is pretty standard. So to pander to 800 ... well, I don't get it ...

Ah well... I do what the client wants ...

If they want 800, fine ... if they want 900, fine ...

I prefer 100% :thumbsup

Smart clients who keep an eye on making as much as they can from the surfers on the net won't turn away the 15%-25% that still have small monitors.. or.. oh here's a thought.. laptops... Seriously... between alienating those with 800x monitors and those on dial-up, it's no wonder so many porn companies fail.

rounders 11-25-2006 06:50 PM

i like 800x600

AJHall 11-25-2006 06:50 PM

I still design for 800 by default unless the client asks for 1024.

rounders 11-25-2006 06:51 PM

i like 800x600

TGPturnkeys 11-26-2006 01:07 AM

usually I start new project with this settings: width - 770 and height - 800

Matt 26z 11-26-2006 01:47 AM

All vital components of the site should be in the first 800 if it's a static layout.

smack 11-26-2006 02:12 AM

i always try to keep mine at no more than 750 - 790.

depends on the page though. although i rarely if ever go above 800. unfortunately 800x600 is still the lowest common demoninator.

Paysighting 11-26-2006 02:22 AM

Below 800px.

yeah agree with that one :thumbsup

StuartD 11-26-2006 05:37 AM

www.nhl.com is designed at 1000px wide.

Seems to work for them.

bl4h 11-26-2006 05:41 AM

i try to keep them fluid/adjustable

Some people just like bulky looking 800x600. Its not all about old technology

Twisted Dave 11-26-2006 05:41 AM

NHL is a prime example.

I think worrying about the 15% is too much of a worry ... let's face it ... if they're using 15%, they're probably on a work PC or whatever.... :P

desktop monitors may be getting bigger, but the world is getting more portable and a laptop at 1280 would be a pain in the ass.

I always start a design at 750 wide and use this for everything so I know exactly where the site sits on any resolution.

Magix 11-26-2006 06:22 AM

800 px wide, no more

lucas131 11-26-2006 06:40 AM

780 to be safe

mikeyddddd 11-26-2006 06:44 AM

770 accomodates everyone.

I thought laptops had HIGHER resolutions than desktops?
I have like 3-4 years old dell and it has 1400x1050 resolution..and I bought my mom a cheap acer laptop, and even that has 1280x1024 or something..

Gamiseta 11-26-2006 06:50 AM

i use 700.. its great

what it has and what people are likely to use are 2 different things ...

if you have a 14" monitor, the text would be pretty small at 1400 x 1050 ...

plus, lots of people don't even know what resolution is, or how to change it, so they leave it on what it comes with ... 800x600 or 1024x768

Oracle Porn 11-26-2006 07:07 AM

the days of 800x600 are passing by quickly....i mostly design 800x600 but i dont afraid to use 1024x768 when needed....its fucking 2006 people! surfers got high speed connections and high resolution lcd monitors...

15% is a bit of a stretch - more like 10%. My sites are still made to fit in 800*600, but I'm going to start using more real estate soon.

From Google Analytics:

1024x768 51.18%
1280x1024 13.49%
800x600 9.90%
1280x800 8.28%
1152x864 3.87%
1440x900 2.52%
1680x1050 1.98%
1280x768 1.62%
1400x1050 1.14%
1600x1200 1.02%

Mine came with its max resolution set out of the box (1440x960) (a Mac) and I've loved that resolution. It was only last week that a colleague commented on how small the text was and that she had difficulty reading it. I've never found it small at all - so I looked at her 1200 res monitor (or thereabouts) and couldn't believe how BIG the text was. It was like she was blind or something!!

Basic_man 11-26-2006 09:56 AM

The standard for 800x600 resolution is 760px wide.

780 is ok too ;)

BUT 960px wide is rule now, all 780x and less is sucks now

Zuzana Designs 11-26-2006 10:17 AM

I ask the client as some have bigger thumb sizes and need that.. and freesites I never go over 760 so there is no chance to scroll .. I test them all in several different browsers and resolutions to make sure it works ..

uno 11-26-2006 10:24 AM

I still do 800x600 in general, unless its something i really care about personally and it looks good on higher res.

DjSap 11-26-2006 10:27 AM

I use 770...it really depends on your crows...for mainstream there is a big spread between tech sites that can go above it and normal folks site that have to stay under 780...

Babaganoosh 11-26-2006 10:27 AM

My stats show 1024x768 is the most popular. 800x600 is in third behind 1280x1024
