verizon wireless broadband w/laptop?
anyone using this is USA?
i see they have a free Audiovox PC5740 EV-DO PC Card if you signup for the $80/month 2-year plan, they pitch it as speeds "up to 2.4mbps". anyone know what the true upload and download speeds might be? i need to use my laptop when traveling. is there any better wireless broadband system in the usa? thanks! |
If you are using a Treo that has broadband, you can simply use that feed. I think the software is called pdanet.

My Sprint card sucks so if you can get 2.4 mbps, GO FOR IT!!!

I have that setup and it's useful. I like to work from various places so it's nice to have, although the speed isn't always the greatest. Depending on the signal, down speed can be around 50-100kbps (uses National Access network), but with a good signal, I get between 400-700kbps (connects to Broadband Access network). Can't recall upload, but it's not the greatest so hopefully you don't have to upload too much.
Be sure to tweak your modem settings once you install the hardware/software, otherwise it won't connect at a fast speed. I had to change the max modem speed in a few places and just put it at the highest setting. If you're going to be traveling and not sure if you will always have a hotspot to connect to, it's probably the best, or one of the best options available. Plus, with hotspots, they tend to filter ports and/or content whereas this is wide open. Also, if you have a Verizon account, it's $60 instead of $80. |
i have this and best i ever got was 1500 down and worst 100 down in the middle of nowhere tho.

I'd be pretty devastated if I had to live without it now. :2 cents: |
p.s. Never noted the upload speed, and though there are other offerings out there, I went with Verizon simply because I've been with them for years. So, in answer to your question, there may be better service available but I am not aware of it.

I use it, I love it

i cant wait to jump onto 1 of those, but that price is shitty

well, thanks for your input you guys.
i did buy it a couple days ago, and i can tell you that it really does work, i can actually use it in places i can't even get a cell call out, tested it surrounded by trees in the game preserve near my house where i got zero bars on my t-mobile cellphone, running on a 3 year old laptop with the pc5740 card. i'm totally jazzed. |
